Officials determine the stabbing death of an 18-year-old man at Comfest last weekend was accidental, not criminal.
COLUMBUS, Ohio—Officials have determined that the stabbing death of an 18-year-old man at Comfest last weekend was accidental, not criminal as first indicated.
Columbus police were dispatched to Goodale Park, 120 W. Goodale St., on a disturbance call at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
Officers saw two people: One was covered in blood. The second was spotted near the first, blood-covered person, according to CPD Sgt. Rich Weiner. The second person was held for questioning.
A knife was recovered, and witnesses also were questioned, Weiner said.
Victim Bryan Barbin, 18, suffered four to five stab wounds and died from his injuries early Sunday at Grant Medical Center.
Officers questioned a suspect a short time after the incident, according to Columbus police radio dispatchers.
However, according to police, the investigation revealed the stabbing was not criminal in nature and Barbin’s death was ruled accidental, pending the coroner’s autopsy results.

Mike-
It’s understandable where you’re coming from, but the simple (and obvious) fact is that not all drugs belong in the same sentence. Some are fit for casual consumption and the reality is that criminalizing them would cause more harm than good. I’m talking about alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and yes, I believe even marijuana. Others are too intense and unpredictable (PCP, LSD or “acid”, mescaline, etc.) or too addictive (crack, heroin, meth, etc.) to be an acceptable freedom in a functioning society…
Make no mistake, what happened was a terrible tragedy and it would not have happened had it not been for a drug (“acid” is being tossed around alot but just based on my personal experience in the field of criminal law, I would guess PCP is more accurate). But to drop the old “drugs are bad” line is to take the easy way out…. Don’t forget that, by textbook definitions, Tylenol and Pepto-Bismol are “drugs”.
If a person has no intent to kill self, a death by their own hand, gun, knife, drugs, alcohol, etc., is NOT suicide.
Mike, this was not suicide. His friend that was with him has told police he dropped bad acid and stabbed himself in fear of something being there that really wasn’t. Toxicology reports are still pending to confirm this is the truth.
A bad acid trip caused him to commit suicide?? Yeah, I really love those that defend drug use
Bryans friend made him have a bad trip while on acid, seeing things that were not there he tryed to stab them off of his body. I wouldn’t feel sorry for the kid, that was his choice.
My wife and I were at Comfest and walked upon this tragedy just seconds after it occurred.
I watched Bryan lying on the ground and thought of my grandsons. This is someone’s son and grandson.
I prayed and my heart felt such sorrow as I suspected the grave nature of his injuries. I did see another young man holding Bryan’s hand with such concern on his face trying his best to provide help and comfort. I just don’t believe it is a time for us to debate the specifics but rather pray for Bryan, his family and friends. GOD keep you in his arms Bryan. Poppy.
My condolences to the family of the victim.
This story is incredible, innocent by association. Hmmm….......
LOL AwesomeGuy
Hey, who hasn’t stabbed themselves 2 or 3 times on occasion and almost not stopped?? This guy was just a little less lucky than the average accidental multiple self stabbing!
Does anyone else see the resemblance of this press release to one from the mayor and his people?
