Reports: Young Boy Witnesses 3X Fatal Shooting

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio—A woman has been charged in the shooting deaths of a couple and their adult daughter in southern Ohio’s Scioto County, the sheriff said Tuesday.

Sheriff Marty Donini said Kara M. Garvin, 29, of Franklin Furnace is charged with three counts of aggravated murder in the deaths of Edward D. Mollett, 46, his 43-year-old wife Juanita F. Mollett and their 20-year-old daughter Christina J. Mollett

Donini said his officers were called to the Molletts’ mobile home in Franklin Furnace where the shootings occurred about 6:30 p.m. by a relative who lived nearby.

A 6-year-old grandson of Edward and Juanita Mollett and nephew of Christina Mollett was at the mobile home when the shootings occurred and ran to the relative’s home for help, Donini said.

The boy was not injured, the sheriff said.

Donini said Garvin turned herself in to authorities around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. She was being held in the Scioto County jail with bond set at $1.5 million pending a hearing Friday.

A preliminary investigation showed that the suspect apparently was known to the victims, and authorities said there were no signs of forced entry. The sheriff did not comment on a possible motive or provide details of the relationship between Garvin and the victims.

The bodies of the two women were found in the living room of the mobile home and Edward Mollett’s body was found in the kitchen, the sheriff said.

Scioto County Coroner Dr. Terry Johnson said the autopsies would be conducted at the Montgomery County coroner’s office.

Garvin was accompanied by attorney Richard Nash when she turned herself in to authorities. A message seeking comment from Nash was left at his Portsmouth office Wednesday.

Franklin Furnace is about 95 miles south of Columbus.
