Buster Douglas Takes On New Fight

COLUMBUS, Ohio—James “Buster” Douglas shocked the world and put Columbus on the map 19 years ago by knocking out the seemingly invincible boxing champion Mike Tyson.

The upset was the most shocking sports story of the day.

Now the quiet guy who defeated Tyson has turned a page in his life by writing a book about the challenges he has faced in the nearly two decades since the big fight.

Douglas told NBC 4’s Mike Bowersock that one day in 1994 he found himself weighing 400 pounds and on the way to the hospital in a diabetic coma.

“I remember going in and out before I actually went in that day. It was a real traumatic experience.“

He has turned his life around, becoming a bit of a philosopher and a big of a cook and writing it all down, helping people with the problems he has fought.

He put it down as “Buster’s Backyard Bar-B-Qu Knockout Diabetes Diet,“ a combination of stories, inspiration and recipes.

“Diabetic food, I know when I first came down with it, it was really not that tasteful and that took a lot to get used to and it made it even hard to adjust.“
He’s selling the book on Amazon.

Buster Douglas is a role model not because he knocked down Mike Tyson but because of the way he is facing the challenges he has on diabetes.  That diabetic coma was a wake up call and look at what that led to:  a philosopher cook, and author all rolled into one.
