COLUMBUS, Ohio—His book made The New York Times best seller list for the last three years.
Tucker Max chronicles his drunken and sexual encounters in the form of short stories and he’s creating quite an uproar at The Ohio State University.
It’s a book with a title that says it all: I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell.
Its author Tucker Max openly admits to drinking excessively and sleeping with more women than is safe or reasonable.
The 30-something’s stories have quite a following around the country and in Columbus.
“I’ve read his books, his blogs, they’re all really hilarious,“ said Chase Hoover, an OSU student.
On college campuses around the country, Tucker Max’s name is synonymous with the alcohol-fueled years spent at universities. Now, he’s coming to OSU to share his tales with students like Hoover.
“What does he usually talk about?“ NBC 4‘s Lauren Diedrich asked Hoover.
“Pretty much extreme alcoholism, how big of a jerk he is,“ Hoover said.
Because of those stories, not everyone is throwing out the welcome mat.
“I feel like he exemplifies a rape culture that is already on campus,“ said Stephanie Diebold, an OSU student.
Diebold is a part of a woman’s group at OSU. She calls Max a misogynist and said the school sends the wrong message by allowing the author to speak on campus.
“I don’t think it’s OK for the university to pay a man to come and talk about this and make it OK,“ Diebold said.
The Ohio Union Activities Board is sponsoring the event. They released a statement in response to Diebold’s concerns:
“OUAB does not endorse Max’s viewpoints. However, like any controversial speaker or topic introduced into a university setting, this event provides an opportunity for learning and dialogue—one of OUAB’s many responsibilities as the campus’ programming board.“
Diebold said people planned to protest the event on Monday night.
Max declined NBC 4‘s request for an interview.

Zing! Oh, wait, were you trying to make a point or something Landru? Because if you were you failed miserably.
I don’t believe that Max should be payed for speaking, but if he wants to for free that’s his own thing, and I’m not gonna say no to that. OSU could definitely be putting its money to better use, though.
Universities exist to stimulate the brain, and it sounds like booking this guy has done just that. Maybe students will start to sober up and actually think about the issues he talks about.
RyanE - where do you read that he’s raped other women? Yes he’s slept around a lot, but nowhere does it say that he’s raped any of them.

I think that all destrekor was trying to say is that if two people get drunk and have sex it shouldn’t always be the mans fault. People talk about equal rights, but don’t want to admit equal responsibility. Destrekor wasn’t talking about forced sex from what I read. All that was said was take responsibility for your own behavior. If women are to be truely equal they can not constantly claim victim status when they wake up with the wrong guy. By the way my mother would agree with this and taught my sister not to get into the situation of being to drunk to know what was going on.

Do you read the things that you write? Do you realize that the argument you’re making is completely obscene? Here’s an idea:
GO TALK TO YOUR MOTHER. Ask your mom how she feels about date rape and sexual humiliation. Try sharing some of Max’s work with her. Try telling your mom that girls who drink “are equally exploiting the situation.“ I hope she has the guts to put you in your place.
The guy seems to have a niche audience. The drunken college frat guy doesn’t seem like a big reader and a big money maker in publishing, but good luck to him.
In all honesty, it comes down to how the University is deciding to spend their money, which is why I can see students being upset. We have a very very large group of students, females mind you, who have been raped on campus. OSU is one of the only BIG TEN schools that does NOT PROVIDE ANY financial assistance to victims of rape. Not a penny.
Then to find that they hire a man, who has admittedly raped other women, for entertainment…? Really?
Give me a break OSU. Should have went with Bill Cosby.
It’s a book.. If they are resorting to protesting this, then go protest all the foul mouthed movies too. I read the book, I thought it was funny, anyone with half a brain realizes this guy is an idiot. He’s not promoting rape culture, as a matter of fact he calls himself an a$$hole. If the people protesting are really that concerned, then they underestimate the intelligence of all the students in attendance. freedom of speech works both ways, if you don’t like his stories, and they are stories, then don’t listen.
If you don’t don’t want to hear what he has to say then don’t go see him speak ... easy enough. Why do people need to make a big deal out of everything?
