GAHANNA, Ohio—Authorities confirmed the shooting that killed a local mother and son was a murder-suicide.

NBC 4’s Tom Brockman reported with the latest in the investigation.

An investigation began after Gahanna police received a call from a concerned neighbor Monday night.

“Apparently, a co-worker had told the neighbor the owner of the home had not shown up at work on Monday,” Gahanna Deputy Chief Ken Bell said.

Gahanna police responded to the 100 block of Douglas Drive at about 7 p.m. to check on 57-year-old Maureen Gilbert.

Emergency crews entered through an unlocked front door and found Gilbert and her son, 21-year-old Paul Steven Leibrand, fatally shot inside the home.

Officials said detectives currently think Leibrand fatally shot his mother before turning the firearm on himself.

The two lived together, Bell said, and police were called to the address three times last year: once for a domestic disturbance and two other times on miscellaneous runs.

“Nothing really serious that would lead to us believing there was a problem there,” Bell said about the police runs.

The motive remained unclear.

“We have no idea at this point in time. We’ve talked with family members. There are no indications as to the exact reason why this happened,” Bell said.

“Kinda shocking. They didn’t really speak to anybody. You’d just see them coming and going. That’s about it,” one neighbor said.

Authorities said the fatal shootings happened between Sunday night and early Monday evening.

Bell confirmed the shooting was a murder-suicide Tuesday afternoon.

Gahanna detectives continued to investigate.

I’m not sure how three trips to a house last year doesn’t justify some sort of problem there.  Seems pretty apparent to me that there was.

I grew up in Gahanna and live there now, there isn’t much major crime.  Three trips to a house would red-flag it to me…but maybe that’s just me.

And what’s a “miscellaneous run” anyway?

When you have two folks demised you have a homicide…now let us think abou that.. true BUT!!!!

What happened to murder/suicide. That has to start with two, duh.

Let us give the familys time ingest this situation and the law enforcement sort out the situation before we come to a conclusions. Slap on the wrist, no jury trial for you.
