Program Shows Students Career Options

COLUMBUS, Ohio—High-school students from all over the state were in Columbus last week as the Martin Essex School for the Gifted held its 34th annual summer program.

NBC 4 shares the story because good news matters, too.

Inside the space where CPD SWAT strategizes, students learned some of the tricks of the trade.

“Just about every group we have comes here and asks how to get on the police department at SWAT,” Sgt. John Groom said.

Team members showed the students illegal drugs and explained the dangers.

Later, some of the students talked forensics inside CPD’s crime lab.

“I’m not interested in guns. So, I didn’t know there were so many type of bullets,” student Crystal Hall said during a quick ballistics lesson.

These soon-to-be seniors, like so many others, still are trying to pinpoint a career.

The Martin Essex School for the Gifted gives them a week to sample the options.

“We went to a medical panel. I’d never considered medicine, but now I’m going to check into it,” a student said.

Students who are identified as gifted or talented by their school district apply and are accepted into the summer program.

Students attended similar activities all week, and Cole Lautermilch said he has a new perspective on his future after only seven days.

“It gives me insight into how many opportunities I have as I grow older,” he said. “It’s been a whirlwind experience ... It’s been great.”

The program has been going on here in Ohio for the past 34 years.

The students stay at dorms on the OSU campus, and it’s funded through the Ohio Department of Education.
