COLUMBUS, Ohio—Two Central Ohio eateries are in hot water with the health department for critical health code violations.

Inspectors said the West Gate Import Market has taken care of several critical issues, including cross-contamination, improper food labeling and unapproved food sources, but there is another big problem.

Health officials said they’ve warned the owner multiple times not to knock down a wall between the market and a business she owns next door without submitting a plan and obtaining a license. But, officials said, the owner did it anyway.

“You need to submit plans and we need to approve what’s going on on the other side before you can knock down the wall or actually do the renovation, which you did not follow my direction—again,“ said Josephine Alexander, of Columbus Public Health.

The second restaurant facing violations was the mobile operation at El Huarche Veloz.

Health inspectors said they’re concerned about a lack of food safety knowledge, improper temperatures, hand washing, dirty surfaces and cross-contamination.

The owner said the problems have been taken care of.

Follow-up inspections for both businesses will take place in the next few days.

If needed, the board will take further action July 21.

Just a small FYI…

The regular vendors you see everyday are inspected. They have to have a way to clean their hands, show that foods will not be cross-contaminated (raw chicken not dripping onto the lettuce/drink-ice etc.)

They have to get their license and be inspected randomly. Also, if someone calls in a complaint that forces them to address it immediately based on the severity and might prompt an inspection.

I would LOVE to think that the smaller places described in this newsbit are interested in following the rules, but I see too much evidence they got into it just recently..or they move around allot and they really don’t know the FULL ins & outs of the Food Service Industry.

THe big question..is there a sponored class that people can take to show they are trained/qualified in what needs to be done? Is there a test for qualification? Could it be done without too much hassle? Do you want your government to spend the money on this action?

That’s my gist..hope you enjoy!

I do a pod cast on blogtalkradio dot com username “thatcub”..would be cool to hear from you there!

I have eaten at one of these. And it was quite tasty; perhaps adventuresome. Spicy yet strange and foreign to the palate. A mix of old tuna and new capers combined to explore a new world.

Eyuk!  I’ve never stopped at one of the corner vendors even though they’ve perked my interest while driving by and being hungry.  Doesn’t look to tempting with whatever they are sitting next to an open window where a fly or two or ten could come in and share a bit and leave a little prize on the food.  Don’t think I’ll be stopping any time soon.  Sounds like you could spend a good amount of time in the rest as a result of a visit!  I’ll pass.

You would think these places would make sure they are following proper procedures since they will make it on the news. I’m sure it hurts business. do they inspect these street corner food venders too?
