ORIENT, Ohio —Strong storms roared across the southern part of Central Ohio Tuesday night, and some of the worst damage was in Pickaway County near Orient.

Within the last year, storms have destroyed Dan Ashcraft’s barns twice, NBC 4‘s Mike Bowersock reported.

Three of his barns were either flattened or severely damaged by the storm Tuesday.

Ashcraft said he was on a tractor, bailing hay when it happened.

“The tractor was lifting off the ground, so I jumped out of the tractor and got in a ditch because I thought it was a tornado and I’m still not sure it wasn’t,“ he said.

The storm left golf-ball-sized hail on the ground.

One of his barns had just been built to replace one that was destroyed during a wind storm last September.

A few hours after the storm, many area residents gathered to help Ashcraft recover.

The neighbors gathered pieces of the barn that had been torn apart by the storm and cattle that had been inside the barns were transferred to neighboring farms.

In the same area, a resident’s garage was destroyed by the storm.

Winds in Pickaway County reached tropical storm speed—at least 60 mph.
