Superintendent Gives $10K For Levy

ZANESVILLE, Ohio—An Ohio school district chief has given $10,000 out of her own pocket to help put a school tax issue on the ballot.

West Muskingum Superintendent Sharon Smith says she wanted to spare the financially strapped district in eastern Ohio from using school funds to pay for the levy election May 5. The estimated $15,000 cost is being shared with a career center.

School board president Doug Ramsay says Smith’s donation approved by the board on Wednesday was unexpected and appreciated. He noted that previous levy campaigns drew criticism of the superintendent’s salary, now about $108,000 per year.

Voters have rejected four school issues in three years. Superintendent Smith says new revenue is needed because further budget cuts would shortchange students.
