COLUMBUS, Ohio—The GOP-controlled Ohio Senate plans to hold hearings on Gov. Ted Strickland’s proposal to put slot machines at race tracks to help fill a $3.2 billion budget deficit.
Senate President Bill Harris announced Wednesday that a panel of five senators will begin hearings Thursday. Meanwhile, the Ohio House is slated to vote on a second 7-day budget to give lawmakers more time to reach a compromise for the two-year budget period that started Wednesday.
Strickland, a Democrat, says his gambling proposal would raise about $933 million. The GOP-controlled Senate has rejected the plan without offering an alternative.
Harris says the hearings will help answer how the governor arrived at the revenue estimate and what would happen to school funding if revenue falls short.

Senator Bill Harris appears to be confused. He backs the VLTs at race tracks in 2007 and now that the “other side” has finally agreed to support this form of tax-producing revenue for the State of Ohio, Harris has flipped and decided it’s not the way to go. It’s time for Senator Harris to step up to the plate and propose his version of a $900+ million plan for Ohio or move over and allow the rest of the elected politicians to do his job for him.
you know the thing that really PEES me off is that you aren’t going to stop people from gambling if thats what they want to do. there are casinos all around ohio and BINGO halls everywhere, as well as the STATE lottery. why take all the money that was earned in ohio and send it out of state to be gambled away? they would rather raise MY (a working chump) taxes to the point where i cant afford to live than accept the money that gamblers would THROW at them. thats just ridiculous!! if these RICH BUTT politicians want to refuse the gift of this money, then i purpose that THEY DONATE the 933 million to the state budget out of their OWN POCKETS rather than RAPING ME FOR IT!
Another delay? Does everyone know that Bill Harris is delaying the full release of state funds by doing this? Only 70% of the funds are released for state use until a final budget is passed. So those who have cuts are especially hurting now. He has voted for gambling in the past, why the sudden change? Smells fishy. Get on with it! We would rather have slot machines than higher taxes!!
