COLUMBUS, Ohio—This week is Earth Week and according to a local company, Central Ohioans are looking for ways to go green.

The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio said recycling efforts are up in the area, NBC 4‘s Amy Basista reported.

“Last year, we were up 21 percent from the first quarter and this year, we are up 24 percent this quarter compared to last year,“ said John Remy, of SWACO.

Rumpke spokesperson Jonathan Kisel said their business is also on the rise. In the city of Columbus, the company saw a 5 percent increase in curbside recycling in 2008.

“It’s taken a lot of education and I think we need a lot more, but people understand the importance of the need to recycle,“ Kisel said.
