URBANA, Ill.—A University of Illinois football player is serving a 60-day jail sentence after pleading guilty to drunk driving.

Defensive tackle Josh Brent pleaded guilty June 2 to misdemeanor driving under the influence. He was arrested Feb. 21 in Urbana, near the university’s campus.

Court officials say the 21-year-old Brent started serving his sentence immediately after his plea and could be out of jail in 30 days with credit for time served. He also has been placed on two years of probation.

Illinois football coach Ron Zook suspended Brent after his arrest. Zook has said he’ll decide later whether Brent can play in 2009.

Brent is from Bloomington and started eight games last season, his junior year.
