UPDATE: CPD identifies a would-be robbery suspect who was fatally shot by a 70-year-old grandmother.
COLUMBUS, Ohio—A would-be robbery suspect picked the wrong motel room, and a 70-year-old woman fatally shot the man Wednesday night.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
The suspect attempted to rob a group of people in a motel room and was fatally shot, police said.
The incident happened at about 9:15 p.m. at the Continent Inn Motel at 6225 Zumstein Dr.
The door was standing open on a motel room. The suspect walked into the room, showed a firearm and started to rob several people who were in town for the Quarter Horse Congress, CPD said.
A 70-year-old woman pulled out a handgun and shot the robbery suspect, investigators said.
The suspect fled to the parking lot. The suspect was identified later as 25-year-old Wayne M. Winston. Winston recently moved to the Columbus area from St. Louis, Mo.
Columbus police arrived on the scene at about 9:20 p.m. and found Winston in the lot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the woman might have saved the lives of the people with her in the room.
The woman was transported to CPD Headquarters and was interviewed by detectives.
She was released from custody and won’t face charges, CPD said.
Police considered the city’s 69th homicide of 2009 a self-defense shooting.

sounds like he got what he deserves!
that’s just crazyness!
Thank you MG0087 for clearing that up! And to Granny, bless you and may god give you the strength to get through this rough time. I do hope that you won’t feel to bad about taking a life, especially one that might have turned around and taken someone else’s without a second thought. Now if EVERYONE would fight back, there might be alot less criminals in the world. I know, wishful thinking right!
Idiot - Party of One! DO you really try to Rob a group of people from the Quarter Horse Congress? Cowboys, Old West, Country Living, Guns…? Oh perhaps he missed history class…
I’m sorry I don’t relish in the fact his life was taken, and he was desparate to persue such an act. But we can’t afford to lose Quarter Horse here, and I’m embarrased for what happend to the people, but 70 years old…Still taking care of her own…God Bless
To MG0087, Thanks for setting “The Few” straight.
Been there done that, and found there is always, as you well know, a few nay sayers.
Maybe you have opened some eyes, here’s hoping.
Just remember 99% of us support Law Enforcement, the other 1% are your frequent customers.
Crimney people. I’m one of the responding officer’s so I can’t say much here. But… know this…She was NEVER in trouble, and NEVER assumed to have done anything wrong. The reason she was taken downtown, as ALL self-defense shooters are handled, is to protect HER… you see, if the police did what they WANTED to do, which is treat her like royalty and let her go without the official impartial interview, then it opens her up to civil charges later, and other charges against the police department if they take SOME shooters down, and let other’s go. Homicide has to treat ALL shooters the same way, so that there is no accusations of bias. And every once in a while, what looks like an open and shut case of self-defense is actually a planned murder, so… they have to interview ALL of them ALL the time to avoid any claims of bias, even when it is so obvious that it was self defense, as in this case. And trust me, in these types of self-defense runs, many cops are almost giddy with excitement that the victim fought back. But they have to remain stoic, calm, and by-the-book. It is VERY difficult not to gush with accolades to granny or anyone else who defends themselves from armed robbers, when we see victim’s all the time who were on the losing end of the robbery.
So, for those who are getting all uptight about that fact that she was interviewed, and that Homicide said it was “not likely”, calm down. Homicide *has* to say that so that they are not on record with the media clearing her BEFORE they get the final decision.
And let me explain something else. The CCW didn’t matter…. she has a right to have a gun with her in her hotel room, withOUT the CCW permit (as long as she is not a felon registrant, which she wasn’t, of course). And Ohio’s “Castle Doctrine” did not come into play here either, which allows someone to use deadly force in self defense if someone simply storms into their hotel room and the victim felt their life was in danger, even without a gun in their hands… So, what made this self defense was the fact that she had a gun pointed at her… period. No need to bring in the CCW permit, or the castle doctrine. Anytime ANYone has someone else point a gun at them, they can use deadly force as self defense.
Barring any very unlikely foul play, this was clearly and 100% self defense, and everyone there knew it… but the cops and Homicide, for darn good reason, are forced to at least appear impartial.. when inwardly, they want to high five grandma.

so why was the woman taken away by the police if she had done nothing wrong ? ? they were fishing for a way to charge her for the shooting and the murder of the suspect…..
Now read the concealed carry laws for ohio…and also the part about how and when you can use a firearm…now all the catch phrases you have when dealing with the patrol… how you have to store your firearm and when you can have it in reach..also what you have to tell the patrol if stopped and where you must place your hands…
It is a mess of a law…..
and LOL about the tinfoil hat!!!!!
I know this woman, and I for one, am grateful that her and the rest of her family made it out of this situation alive. I can’t even believe this happened, completely blows my mind. It’s a shame that a man lost his life, but who wouldn’t have done the same thing? This story could have ended much worse than it did.
It makes you think a little more about carrying a firearm at all times. I read these other comments and it appears to me that BeckyS is racist against Texans. Why would she(deadeye granny) have to be from Tx? Not everyone from Tx dresses like Walker Tx Ranger. There are people all over the US who carry guns, and i am soooo glad they do, cause now i don’t have to go to a funeral for 4 very close friends.
Excellent signature mrsp!
