COLUMBUS, Ohio—A man fatally shot an armed intruder while protecting his 5-year-old relative late Wednesday, authorities said.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
Columbus police continued to investigate an overnight shooting on the city’s Southwest Side.
CPD said the incident started with a home invasion but it was the suspect who was fatally shot.
CPD was called to a home on the 1500 block of Autumn Village Drive on reports of a shooting at about 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Officers found a man on a front porch with a gunshot wound to his neck.
The armed suspect broke into the home shortly before he was fatally shot, CPD said.
“There was a knock on the door. The resident went to the door, at which time the victim out front entered the house with a firearm in commission of an aggravated robbery,” said CPD homicide Sgt. Dana Norman.
As the armed suspect entered the home, a man picked up his 5-year-old relative to protect the child as well as a firearm and fired shots, according to authorities.
The suspect attempted to flee the home after being wounded but collapsed on the porch. He died a short time later.
Detectives have not released the identity of the suspect currently, but NBC 4 was told the shooter and suspect did not know each other.
The police report listed the suspect as an unknown black male in his 20s.
The man who fatally shot the suspect was not a resident of the home; he was staying there with relatives. There were four people in home at time of the invasion: a woman, child and two men, one of whom is bedridden.
Authorities have not released additional information on the shooter’s identity, either.
“It’s a very quiet neighborhood,” said neighbor Gary Dulaney.
No other injuries were reported from the incident.
“Five-years-old, man. You’re always concerned about the kid. I mean you hope you don’t bring your child into that situation. It is scary. I feel bad for him,” Dulaney said.
No charges were filed against the man who shot the intruder currently, but the case will be presented to the Franklin County grand jury for review.
Anyone with additional information on the city’s 49th homicide of 2009 was asked to call the CPD homicide squad at 614-645-4730.

pwhited: Do you also have black trashbags blocking all your windows? a Mercedes and 3 SUVs with 20” rims and spinners? Lots of traffic coming and going to your house at all hours? As well as sitting by your front door armed? IF you qualify for all of those as I stated in my original post, THEN you can compare yourself to the home invasion “victom”. If you are just a home owner that has taken your own security measures, then kudos to you and I sincerely hope that if you ever need to use it for self defense, that you are successful.
However if you have 5 other things that when all added together make you look like youre dealing drugs and someone comes to get some of your stash or cash, then dont be surprised if Im not calling you a hero when one criminal comes to rob another. oops alleged criminal.
Maumi and Laura, please read my post at the article comments about the new driver’s licenses.
Also, is there a way to exchange email addresses so when we REALLY get off-topic we can hold private discussions?
This is a perfect example of Ohio’s new “Castle Doctrine” law passed last October. You are allowed to shoot to kill if someone forces themselves into your home & the local nor state governments aren’t allowed to press charges. Look it up. They can investigate, but no charges. We’re one of about 27 states that have this law. Home or occupied vehicle allows you to protect you or your family in any way you deem necessary, even fatally. Using any means. If this guy’s attorney doesn’t know about it, tell him to look it up. Ohio’s version doesn’t allow for business robberies or stick-ups like a number of other states, but may ammend this law in the future.
wow good shot but you need to do better shoot him on the head wont bleed much and he stops where he is shot,, so you need to go to the range a little more….but all an all, good shot the city should pay you for the money they saved
I agree wholeheartedly with Teri’s reply to this article dated 7/30. I have been the victim of a home invasion. I am thankful every day that I am still alive. I learned a lesson from my home invasion: get armed and keep your weapon close by at all times. My home invasion happened at slightly after 10:00 A.M. I never would have thought that some punks would try to break into my home in broad daylight and I even live on a busy street. I feel badly for all victims of home invasions as I know “exactly” how they feel. If there is ever a next time at my house I will not hesitate to kill the intruder. Thumbs up to the victim in this case.
Truckeye: If someone pushed through my door you would read about one more criminal found dead. I’m not sure why you’re surprised that someone might have a firearm handy, I’m wearing one as I type this. I’m armed the whole time when I’m awake at home, and as often as I can when I’m not at home. Can’t carry at work. Other than that, I’m armed. This city is getting more dangerous every year, and I’m getting older. I can’t “fist it out” with the young thugs, and most of them are carrying guns anyway, so the only solution is to be armed.
I am consistently amazed at how individuals love to paint others into nice little boxes.
mlbfan76, I am a liberal who believes in and supports the 2nd Amendment. I am a liberal who believes and supports appropriate and adequate punishment for criminals and do not believe they should be made into “victims”.
Obviously, based on the comments from your post, I am not your typical “liberal” as many liberals are not typical, nor are many conservatives.
This is a story about a man who did what he thought he had to in order to protect his family and his home. Being a liberal or conservative has nothing to do with it because I can tell you that if someone invades my home in that manner, they will be leaving in a body bag.
Does that make me sound too liberal?
I am saddened to read of your loss.
BTW, Oscar was correct. He did NOT wish future execution of the now age 11 yr child.
Oscar did predict that such an event may happen when youthful transgressors fail to change their societal skills.

“My cousin was murdered ....
“Every story has the possibility of having many different scenarios. No matter what, as of now there is one less violent individual off the streets, and common sense says that as long as the CPD pays close attention to this case they may retrieve more.“
My cousin was murdered through the front door of his girl friends house. He didn’t live there but was staying over that night. There was a knock at the door around midnight and as approched the door they began to fire. Evidently they thought they were shooting the girls exboyfriend. Every story has the possibility of having many different scenarios. No matter what, as of now there is one less violent individual off the streets, and common sense says that as long as the CPD pays close attention to this case they may retrieve more.
Im not for the vigilante style of justice, but I agree that if more criminals paid with their life, it may slow down the onslaught of violence and crimes. That being said, it’s not always the way the kids is brought up, some people are just bad people, or something that happens in life turns them that way.
I do find it a little strange that the intruder first knocked at 11 p.m. at night. What is going on at that house…indeed.
