CPD Searches For Assault Suspect After Man Dies
CPD
UPDATE: An assault victim dies at the hospital, and CPD issues a warrant for the arrest of suspect Bryan M. Curvin.
COLUMBUS, Ohio—A man died at the hospital early Tuesday after Columbus police said an hours-long party ended in a brutal assault.
NBC 4 got RIGHT TO THE POINT.
The attack happened outside a home on the 2900 block of Azelda Street around 9:30 p.m. Monday, according to CPD.
Witnesses told NBC4 the incident started out as a fight among friends but quickly became out of hand.
When police arrived at the North Linden scene, they found 42-year-old Richard M. Mathias in the front yard, suffering from head trauma.
Mathias was transported to Riverside Methodist Hospital in very critical condition.
Mathias was pronounced dead at 5 a.m.
Police said that 35-year-old Bryan M. Curvin fled the scene, and CPD said it believes he was the one who assaulted Mathias.
Police have a warrant out for Curvin’s arrest, but he is not in custody currently.
He faces felonious-assault and murder charges.
Witnesses said it didn’t take long before they realized the fight had gone on for too long.
“Fight broke out. This guy thought he was a tough guy. Started out as a friendship fight then it got ugly, and the guy kept pressing and pressing trying to break it up, but by then it was kind of late,“ witness James Riley said.
Anyone with information on Curvin’s whereabouts was encouraged to call CPD’s homicide squad at 614-645-4730.

Really??? Blaming the victim, so typical. Once he choked him until he passed out did he really need to continue to beat his face in to defend himself???? I’d say once the person is unconscious and you continue the attack until the person is dead the defense plea goes out the door. Bryan definitely deserves the death penaly and anyone who watch this brutal beating should be considered an accessory.
ALL of his crimes are not non-violent anymore, huh?
I will reiterate it is easy to judge when you don’t know the details the burglary was on a abandon house. all of his crimes are non-violent. huh?
so you consider burglary and forgery petty crimes, huh?
It is easy to judge when you don’t know the issues surrounding the incident. What you don’t know is the “victim” has a rap sheet a mile long for assault and was declared a menace to society and the “attacker” had been telling the “victim” to stop. The “victim” attacked him and the “attacker” was defending himself and covered in blood from the beating he took from the “victim”. The criminal record that Bryan has is petty crime like no ops. While Rick was in prison for beating a man with a ball bat. Bryan has a right to defend himself and has turned himself in to the police. I know it may not seem so but Bryan and Rick were really good friends and Bryan is devastated over this. Rick would become violent when he drinks and if Rick was alive today he would be calling Bryan to apologize. It was all a terrible accident and nothing more. I now nothing excesses this and my heart goes out to both families. Oh and by the way as far as the neighbors of Bryan you hardly have a right to point fingers since the one is a alcoholic and the other are drug dealer.
He even looks like a loser. See, all you hot heads out there always ready to throw down and fight at any moment, see how it can go. Starts out as a mild argument or fight, next thing someone is dead and someone else has a warrant and will probably spend alot of time if not the rest of his life behind bars.
This is the 2nd time in 2 months that a friend’s son has been beat to death by a “friend”.
This one was at a cook out. NOT an hours long drinking binge.
There is way too much crime in our city for our mayor & city council to cut our safety forces. I say get rid of the “boat” & the finical advisers of Columbus City Council. Oh, & the spokespersons for Coleman & the council.
He will probably get Judge O’Connor and get probation. Remember the alcoholic judge that keeps getting re elected. He gives everyone probation.
Hopefully this piece of trash will go to prison and be offed quickly.
He just got out of jail a few weeks ago! He’s my neighbor… lovely!
