COLUMBUS, Ohio—A group of criminals are terrorizing a Central Ohio neighborhood, breaking into homes and stealing items while the family sleeps.

Natalie Ross said she remains traumatized after she found a burglar in her home on Bella Via Avenue during the early morning hours of July 22.

She caught an unidentified intruder while checking on her infant son who was crying in the next room.

Ross’ husband chased the man out of the house through the garage, where they believe he gained entry.

“I am one of those people. I don’t forget to shut my garage. I knew in my head that the garage was shut before I went to bed,“ Ross said.

The burglar stole Ross’ purse, several cell phones, an Xbox with games and her husband’s wedding ring.

No physical harm was made to any of Ross’ four children—ages 9, 6, 2 and 10-months.

“I think any type of robbery has got to be scary, but to be at home and to know that your life and your children’s life is at risk is the sickest feeling that anyone can imagine,“ Ross said.

Ross said Columbus police told her that a series of similar break-in has occurred in the area. Then, Sunday night, Ross’ neighbor’s home was invaded with the perpetrator raiding the master bedroom while the couple slept.

The Ross’ installed a security system and outdoor motion detectors that trigger flood lights.

They said they hope police catch the person or persons responsible before someone gets hurt.

I would just like to know who someone thinks they are to break into someone’s home and steal their belongings?  Also don’t these idiots worry about people like myself and a few others of you out there that will blow their head off if we catch them?  Is it really worth it to risk death to break into a house?  And you know you are only going to tempt fate so many times and then it will strike, you will break into the wrong house and that will be the end of you.

Come to my house cause the last sound you will hear is my 12 gauge chambering up, then I’m going to repaint the walls with your internal organs!!

About the comment left by pwhited- you’re right about the homeowner being allowed to use lethal force IF they believe their lives to be in danger. I know it’s not your law but how ridiculous is that? If someone has broken into my home in the middle of the night, it’s reasonable to assume my life is in danger! I keep a gun loaded at my bedside and I have to say anybody coming in better look out. I’ll keep pulling the trigger until it’s empty!

Just a note for those who might not know…

There are a couple of inexpensive ways to secure your home Doors and Windows.

1) Master Lock makes a Floor Brace type of Door Lock from your floor to the Door Handle for $20.00 at Lowes.

And…

There’s also those little battery operated Window Alarms that sound when the magnets in them are seperated, which aren’t too expensive either.

In case this helps anyone !!!

Stories like this are one of the reasons I hate that some landlords don’t allow dogs on Campus. OSU Campus has a lot of robberies and break-ins. If your landlord doesn’t have a security system or motion lights, which almost none do, then you should be allowed to have a dog on those grounds alone. Even the harmless little ankle-biter yippers help. Also, OSU Campus needs more street lights down the streets perpendicular to High and Summit and 4th. I haven’t ever been robbed or anything but when I walk my dog at 10pm sometimes I look around and realize how easy it would be to just break a window, steal, and dip out into the night using the alleys. Hopefully the silhouette of my German Shepherd/Akita in the window is a good deterrent.

It would have been great if the husband had used a sledge hammer in the back of the crook’s head. That’s a dangerous situation. If a thief has the nerve to come into the house, it’s a safe bet that he has a weapon. It’s scary to think that these thugs will have weapons and the homeowner may have to give his up if they’re banned. But if they start now shooting them when they catch them in their homes, there may not be too many around when the ban goes into effect. Just a thought

I believe I may have also been a *potential* target of these thieves.  I live in the same area as the Ross’.  Early last Sunday morning I was awakened in my ground level apartment by the sounds of people trying to pry open my windows and bust in my air conditioning unit.  After loosing much sleep because of fear, I finally decided to not become a victim any longer.  I agree with pwhited, refuse to be a victim do what you need to feel safe.  If that includes arming yourself, then go for it.  You have a given right to protect yourself, your family and your property.  Home/Apartment invasion is a terrible crime that goes beyond theft.  All sense of security and peace is lost when your sanctuary is violated.

The police are right to be concerned about the possibility of a homeowner getting hurt after finding a criminal in his/her home.  Ohio law allows homeowners (who are not restricted by law) to defend themselves inside their homes with lethal force IF they believe their life is in danger.  You’ll notice that the police are not able to prevent these crimes, and it’s not for lack of trying; they cannot be at everyone’s front door 24/7.  It is YOUR responsibility to defend yourself and your family.  Buy a firearm, get some training and refuse to be the victim.
