COLUMBUS, Ohio—A man was charged with felonious assault after CPD said he struck an officer with a vehicle.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.

Officer Bryan Hupp was working special duty for an apartment complex located in the area of Gender Road and Winchester Pike on the city’s East Side.

Hupp observed 30-year-old Archie Smith acting suspiciously in the complex at about 4:14 a.m. Thursday, according to a police report.

Hupp attempted to stop Smith when he reportedly fled on foot.

Smith got into a vehicle parked in the area and intentionally drove his vehicle toward Hupp, striking him, according to CPD.

Hupp was transported to Grant Medical Center in stable condition with a lower-leg injury.

Patrol officers stopped Smith in the vehicle a short distance later.

Smith was charged with one count of felonious assault.

CPD said Smith had stolen items from the neighborhood in which he was originally spotted inside his vehicle.

Landru - Yes, I’m sure this officer chose one of the most dangerous professions there is just hoping that he will get hurt so that he can get disability and retire early! That has to be one of the dumbest comments that I have ever read on any of these stories.

All aboard the disability retirement gravy train.  Woo!

Thanks sinecul1 but i will pass. I try very hard to stay positive and open minded that was why i was shocked that Useurhead had even addressed me.  I hope that one day he/she to will be more open minded and not so quick to judge and be defensive towards only what he/she believes. I never said that Smith wasn’t wrong for what he did, I was simply implying that him being a thief and all he may have thought his karma was coming back to bite him in his a$$ and possibly not realizing Hupp was an officer of law.  Personally i feel that all thieves are low life parasites.
And I too hope Officer Hupp makes a full recovery, a knee injury in the line of work can possibly cost you your job and I hope that is not the case for this officer.  He was not working overtime/second job for nothing.

Hoping Officer Hupp has a speedy recovery, and also hoping Maumi breaks all his fingers.

“Maumi do you actually think before words flow through your fingers?“

Are you serious. I said I wonder because I know that the officer that patrols my fathers compex doesn’t always wear a uniform and he sists there in an unmarked vehicle.

Open your mind to all possibilities before you begin to cast stones.

Like I said below…..“ppl will never cease to amaze me.“

I agree! He should be charged with attempted murder!

Officer Hupp - my thoughts are with you and your family! Hope you will have a speedy recovery!

As for Officer Hupp, I hope he is recovered quickly and back to work soon.

Maumi do you actually think before words flow through your fingers?

Yes, it is a uniformed assignment as are nearly ALL special duty assignments.  Just to clear up the next comment that someone will sure spout off saying “thats what you get for working overtime!“  Special duty is not paid by the city it is paid by the private employer the officer is working for, not a dime comes from your hard earned tax paying dollars.

Ppl never ceasse to amaze me, although I wonder if the special duty officer had on a uniform, the suspect may have thought that the officer was trying to rob him or something.

Smith should be charged for attempted murder.
