Decorated Vet Dies After Home Invasion

DAYTON, Ohio—Police say an 85-year-old decorated veteran of three wars has died from injuries suffered in an invasion of his home.

A neighbor found retired Army Sgt. Maj. North Woodall unconscious and bloody late Monday.

Police say he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the front door had been kicked in.

The coroner’s office said Tuesday that Woodall died from blunt force to his head.

Police are trying to determine whether anything was stolen and to identify a suspect or suspects.

Authorities say Woodall served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam before retiring from Army Special Forces after earning two Silver Stars.

Friends say he and other veterans returned in late June from a trip to Washington, D.C., to visit war memorials.

CBJ19, that was a beautiful comment. I hope you realize you are a respected hero as well.

I would like to reflect the comments of jls1967. God Bless you Sgt. Maj. Woodall, and may you rest in peace. I would like to thank him, and SM Sgt. JLS for their brave, and selfless service to our country. It is a shame that the world is the way it is, and a man can come home from serving in three wars only to be killed by two bit worthless scumbags that have most likely never contributed one second of their life for the betterment of the United States. I would also like to say that I am a Columbus Firefighter, and I agree that this is not the place for Issue 1 comments. Let’s give this true American Hero the respect he deserves.

God Bless and watch over you Sgt Maj. Woodall. To serve our country so scum like that can be free makes me sick. Being a war vet myself I appreciate and salute what Mr. Woodhall had done for me and the USA. It’s a shame and a pity his life had to end on a tragic note by the hands of cowards. Rest in peace Sgt Maj. In closing, for those who want to make this a tax issue go to that story and place your input there. This story is definitely not the place for that. Please show this elderly gentleman some respect. Thank you.

I am asuming that Jayb and wow09 are affiliated with CPD or CFF. 1st, I would like to address that this occured in Dayton. Secondly, CPD wants for the citizens of Columbus to allot them the respect they deserve, yet you have failed to show this Veteran any respect whatsoever.  No one knows what the occurance was behind this story but the individuals involved. And there was absolutely no excuse for taking this mans life when he fought so hard to give us ours.  May he rest in peace and recieve the appreciation and respect that he has more than earned.

You all disgust me for turning this mans story into a blog about city taxes.  I understand that this hero fought for over 20 years, risking his life for your right to blather on about anything and everything…but for just once in his honorable life, do you think you could give it a rest and pay the man some respect?

Many who oppose the permanent City income tax increase are not turning their backs on the police/fire, they are turning their backs on our inept Columbus City Council who are certainly licking their chops at the money that they are going to be able to spend/squander with a permanent 2.5% income tax once the economy recovers.  Then the next time we have an economic downturn they will want 3%.  This cry of “no increase” in 25+ years is horsecrap - 2% of 2009 income is a lot more than 2% of 1983 income.  Business supports the increase in part because it is on wages - not corporate profits.

wow09 - they’re not there as it is, so the joke of a levy failing won’t make much of a difference

I personally cannot wait until the levy fails.  I cannot wait to hear everyone crying about the crime/time it takes for fire to get to someone.  I cannot wait to laugh reading the postings about, where are all our police/fire?  I sure hope the police/fire do not turn their backs on everyone like most of the posters here have already turned their back on them.

I agree with Upchuckinit. This is a terrible crime perpatrated by two bit punk cowards. I will pray that they get everything thats coming to them and then some. I am also available for jury duty as well as inserting the needle that will allow them to be able to take the cowards way out. It is a shame that we do not have eye for a eye justice. I guess that once a coward always a coward should not suprise anybody.

an 85 year old man posed no real resistance to this or (these) cowards.  It was not necessary to harm this gentleman in this way to probably steal what little he had in his possession.  This was just an act of pure malice.  I hope when they are caught they rot in a jail cell with vermin for as long as this hero lived.
