A local woman is charged with animal cruelty after her daughter says her mother slammed a family pet into the ground, killing it.

NBC 4 reported on WHERE THIS STORY STANDS.
Retta McKibben’s 14-year-old daughter called authorities Tuesday, July 7, saying her mom was drunk and had slammed her pet Chihuahua, Zoe, into the ground, killing it, according to Buckeye Lake police.
Officers found the dog’s body outside McKibben’s home. Police said Zoey was wrapped in a blanket and placed on a chair next to a trash can.
Buckeye Lake resident Retta McKibben was taken into police custody and charged with animal cruelty.
The dog’s skull was crushed and its spinal cord was ripped away from the base of its skull, according to a necropsy report.
Neighbor Christy Housley said McKibben loved her four dogs and helped find homes for other animals. Housley said she got her dog Sable from McKibben.
Authorities said McKibben had a fairly clean record previously.
She was ticketed two weeks ago after one of McKibben’s other dogs got out of her house and attacked another dog. McKibben also had some traffic violations.
McKibben’s other three dogs were taken into custody by animal officials.
She was arraigned in court Tuesday. McKibben received a $,5000 cash surety bond.
She could face as much as 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fee in the misdemeanor charge.

“She was arraigned in court Tuesday. McKibben received a $,5000 cash-assurity bond”
The correct bond would be $5000 cash or surety. There is no such thing as an assurity bond.
Well, I had added an earlier comment about how sorry I had felt for the kids. ESPECIALLY since they (or at least the daughter) saw it happen. The only VILE thing on here is the fact that this story is even in the news because of it happening. That’s VILE. There is no excuse for what she did!!! Call me ignorant or not, but what she did is wrong and inexcusable, and if there is more truth, then maybe you all should write to channel 4 and reitterate the real truth!!! Do not scold others for their opinions. Which I for one agree!!
Thank you Crickett for confirming my comment earlier regarding ignorant posts…you just added another!
We must not be reading the same article because I don’t see any “outpouring of caring for the children and family”! If calling the son, Nick “deluded” then scrutinizing the brother for apologizing for his sister’s action is considered an outpour of caring for the family then you are beyond delusional.
VILE THINGS!!!!! What is being said is NO WHERE NEAR AS VILE AS WHAT SHE DID!!!!!!!!!! Get a grip lady!! There is an outpouring of caring for the children and the rest of the family, but not her. WHAT SHE DID IS INEXCUSABLE!!!!!
How awful, and the kids saw it??? That’s a shame. I think the law is too lenient with animal cruelty offenders.
What Retta did was intolerable beyond words and there is absolutely no excuse! She(including her family) will have to pay the price and live with this for the rest of her life. That itself is worst then death.
It blows my mind that the majority of people on here read a half page news article or watch a 30 second report and all of the sudden you become this ‘psychic-super hero detective’. The information you got from that half page article or 30 second report and all of the sudden you know all the facts, details and everything else in between. You rush to write ignorant, vile, untrue comments and you don’t…not even for a second think of the children and family involved.
SHAME ON ALL OF YOU!!!
“Authorities said McKibben had a fairly clean record previously.“
I don’t know where the ‘authorities’ got their information, but this woman has charges for DUI, child endangerment, etc - in Franklin, Licking and Fairfield counties.
This woman needs some serious help - and she should not be permitted to be around children or animals.
W333 please don’t make excuses for your sister. I’m sure no one forced her to consume alcohol in excess. Your sister actually needs to be sentenced to jail time, anger managment classes and not be able to own a pet “ever”. I certainly feel the daughter should be removed immediately because she did the right thing and I fear now she will held resposible by her mother for making call. YES, the dog is dead and that is very sad and deserves a strict punishment but for now we need to turn our attention to the needs of the child that is only 14 years of age and protect her against any fallout her mother might now due to her for making the call. The daughter should be comended for her bravery on making the call. NOTE: Nothing was ever said about DUI which unfortunately police have to view. I think the daughters report she came home drunk should be evidence enough in this case!!! Shame on you W333, go take care of your neice!!!!!
I have to say Congrats to her daughter for having the guts to turn her mom in. With how she dealt with the dog, I can’t imagine what she’d do to her kids when she got mad.
I think animal cruelty needs to be taken much more seriously in this country. Currently cruelty is a misdemeanor, it needs to be upgraded to a felony. I think it’s ridiculous that you kill an innocent animal that did nothing to deserve to die and all you get is a fine and a month or two in jail. Honestly people could take a few lessons from pets, they love unconditionally, they dont lie, cheat, or steal from you, they are not greedy and looking to take you for all you’re worth. Truthfully pets are far more trustworthy than most people and don’t deserve to be slaughtered like this as an outlet for anger
