LANCASTER, Ohio —Lancaster police used a Taser on a man who was using inhalants, and the man caught on fire.

NBC 4 gives you the FAST FACTS.

All of the following information came from an official release.

Lancaster officers were dispatched to the Kmart lot on Memorial Drive about 8 p.m. Monday on a report of a man huffing from an aerosol can and running into traffic.

Officers said they found a local homeless man, Daniel Wood, yelling at a crowd of about 10 people.

Wood, 31, tried to run from police.

The officers said they tried to gain control of Wood, who kicked and tried to bite the officers while attempting to continue to discharge the aerosol can into his mouth.

One of the two on-scene officers deployed a Taser.

One prong struck Wood in the arm and the other in the chest.

The officer said he saw a flame ignite.

He said he shut off the Taser and approached Wood to put out the flame. The other officer assisted.

Wood was handcuffed, and medics were requested.

Wood was arrested and taken to the jail after on-scene treatment.

He was arrested on resisting arrest and drug abuse charges.

Well if that were the case, it would certainly be a travesty because we’re not talking about menial snitching… we’re talking about the potential for good cops to use their strength in numbers and shake the tree a bit - ridding it of the good-ol-boy system.

Condemning overuse and abuse of tasers, and demanding responsibility for mistakes is a good place to start.

because they have a code of protection.  and then have the nerve to get upset when young adults refuse to snitch due to the consequences of snitching…..hmmmmmm, funny how they match up.

Standard defense: “the cop felt threatened”

Translation: “the cop was annoyed”....ZzzZzzT!!

Why don’t the more responsible cops get more vocal about abuses and misjudgments?  There are plenty of stand-up cops out there that stay silent when dumb stuff happens.  Why?

wildbill, are you a cop?

Even Frankenstein would’ve realized, “Uhhh flammable contents under pressure, taser sparks not good idea… fire baaaad!“

If I am not mistaken it says on an aerosol can to keep away from open flames
or sparks. The man caught fire cause of the spark from the taser and the aerosol
can or the mist from it. The taser did not cause the fire as it was used.

Wow, my doctor never prescribed me an aerosol can.

Well said ShortStuff.  Glad to hear you made it. Unfortunately, only few actually have a success story such as yours, and more will develop a success story after hitting rock bottom and seeing the light.  I feel for individuals in these situations, although I do get upset with their actions at times, I have to understand that it is their addiction that is the problem.  I don’t understand why they are called rehabilitation centers when it appears as if only 5% of the individuals actually turn their life right side up.

TasteTheReality— I was prescribed medication for ADD when I was in 4th grade, and antidepressants when I was in high school.  I’m now a successful 24 year old woman, free of addiction, taking no mood-altering medications, and working in public safety.  Certain personality traits and upbringing can predispose people to addiction.  Certain situations necessitate mood-altering medications.  Do I think they are abused?  Absolutely.  They are not a cure-all and shouldn’t be a substitution for good parenting.  Could this man have benefitted from some sort of medication at some point in his life, to prevent him to take the path he has taken?  Very likely.

Why not, thats what LPD did.  Got their toys a couple of days ago and couldn’t wait to go taze someone.  Too bad I hav no toxins in me so I won’t set aflame….sorry for the disapointment jgood57, but they tax levy passed so you can always apply for a position with CPD and taze whomever you want, they’ll find a way to cover it up.
