DELAWARE, Ohio—A man was sentenced for injuring a K-9 deputy by punching the dog several times in the face.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.

Judge Everett H. Krueger sentenced Jeffrey L. Metz, 45, to 180 days in jail and five years of probation.

He was sentenced in Delaware County Common Pleas Court Monday.

Metz was driving more than 90 miles per hour on U.S. Route 42 northbound last January, according to Delaware County sheriff’s deputies.

When deputies attempted to pull over Metz, he continued to speed, and a high-speed pursuit ensued.

He spun out and stopped in a field.

Metz refused to listen to deputies’ orders to get out of his vehicle.

After numerous commands, K-9 deputy Thor was sent in to remove Metz.

Metz punched Thor several times in the head and throat, breaking the dog’s tooth.

He was charged and convicted on one count failure to comply with order or signal of a police officer, a third-degree felony, and one count of assaulting a police dog, a fourth-degree felony.

Metz was found guilty on both charges Wednesday, June 17, in the Delaware County Common Pleas Court.

He faced up to six-and-a-half years in prison.

It was the first felony conviction involving a K-9 assault in Delaware County’s criminal history.

If the police were allowed to do their job instead of having their hands tied by people who think that the bad guys have all the rights and the cops none, and if we put them in jail it cost more to keep a bad guy than it does to send a child to school.  I thinks police should shoot or taze first and ask question later.  It is the lawyers and Judges who need to open their eyes.  A dog is not stupid just people, and people who break the law should not have rights.

That’s stupid, a dog isn’t a deputy, it’s a dog.  People watch too much television.  Animals are animals.  Those who don’t respect that learn the hard way, like that crocodile hunter guy, and Sigfried or Roy, whichever it was.

I don’t like that the guy was beating on a dog, but let’s face it, he was defending himself.  Like I said before, if the cops would do the job they’re paid to do, then they wouldn’t be subjecting animals to those conditions in the first place, and there wouldn’t be all of this silly talk of ‘Deputy Dawg’.

you’re wrong AverageGuy, I have alot of friends that are police officers some of them are K9 handlers.  A police dog is considered an officer, assaulting a police dog is the same as assaulting an officer.  Also these officers consider their dog the same as their partner, you harm a police dog and the officer handling the dog will break your neck

Im sure that Thor is a great asset to the DCSO and he is well trained and that I appreciate what the officers do on a daily basis…........ But a “Dog as an officer of the Law”?  Give me a break….....

if   ever I was called to jury duty, it will definately end in a hung jury based on that premise…. and I will never give in to the idea that a dog will have the same   status as an officer of the law….. No matter who argues otherwise,  so prosecutors.. you need to pick your jury well!

Landrau—Seriously? Grow up.

They broke Metz’s window out with an asp, attempted to remove him from the vehicle, used mace, tased him, and then sent the dog in through the window.  The deputies were doing their jobs exactly as they’d been trained, and the force was warranted.

Thor is a great asset to DCSO, and it is a shame what happened to him.  In my opinion, Metz should have been charged with more than he was due to his conduct.

This dog was an officer of law. Of course this man recieved a harsher sentence.  Besides, the fireman played the psychology card.  I know quite a few people that have checked themselves into mental hospitals in order to benefit off future incidents.

If I were one of those deputies he would have gotten some roadside justice before going to jail.  He would have woke up the next morning wondering if a truck hit him

I think animal cruelty is horrendous; but why does this guy get more time than the fireman that KILLED his two dogs?  Just curious.

Landru, I’ve seen your posts on many different stories and have to ask—are you 12 or 13?  You have to be somewhere in that age range to show such immaturity and ignorance in your posts…perhaps even younger…

I should also say that I think the headline “Man Gets 180-Day Sentence For Punching K-9 Deputy” is purposely misleading.  He was sentenced for 2 felonies, the punch was the lessor of the two.

If the lazy cops don’t want their dogs to get beat up then they should do their jobs themselves.
