Man Questioned In Fatal Portsmouth Shooting

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio—A 43-year-old man was shot and killed in Portsmouth Thursday morning.

Officers were called to the 1200 block of 4th Street shortly after 2 a.m. on a report of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers found Carl Eugene “Gene” Smallwood, of Greenup, Ky., suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was transported to Southern Ohio Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was scheduled for later Thursday.

Police questioned 35-year-old Christopher Hutchins in connection with the case, but no charges have been filed.

Portsmouth police continue to investigate the shooting.
