UPDATE: A man accused of killing a local nursing student with a single punch is sentenced.
COLUMBUS, Ohio—A man accused of killing a nursing student with a single punch was sentenced Monday.
It’s a case NBC 4 has been following since Sunday, April 6, 2008.
Brent Goode, 22, was sentenced to 31 days in jail, 60 days of house arrest and three years of probation Monday morning in Franklin County common pleas court.
A fight over a bottle of beer turned ugly Sunday, April 6, 2008, when 29-year-old Nick Foss, a nursing student, was punched by Goode outside of Gaswerks, a popular bar in the Arena District.
Nick Foss died three days after the fight, and Goode turned himself in for the crime weeks later.
Goode pleaded guilty to one count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, Wednesday, June 18, 2009.
As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors dropped a charge of involuntary manslaughter.
Goode already has served 29 days of his 60-day jail sentence; he will serve 31 more days in the Franklin County jail.
Judge Steven McIntosh said in 25 years of law he had not seen such a show of support in the courtroom.
Person after person, friend after friend, family member after family member told the court how Foss’ death left a void in their life.
“The day I lost my brother was the worst day of my life. When Nick passed, I not only lost my brother but I lost my best friend,“ brother Chris Foss said.
“I was the lucky one to have had a son like him,” mother Terry Ross said.
“I can just remember the way he could make everyone laugh and the way he was so charismatic,“ cousin Maria Bowsher said.
During sentencing, Foss’ parents told the court time will not heal all wounds and Goode apologized to the family for Foss’ death.
“We’ve been given a life sentence, and nothing, nothing can even change that,” father Charles Foss said.
“So much was lost over something so stupid. I can’t tell you how sorry I am in words, but I will continue to keep you and your family in my prayers,” Goode told Foss’ family.

Had this happened in california there wouldn’t had been any jail time. They just issue a ticket.
I wish we could hook up through Yahoo messenger or facebook,we need to talk! What a travesty! I have not been able to understand why children are not afforded the same CIVIL irights as adults when it comes to things like rape and murder?!
Laura, it is sort of a long story but to shorten it up, he recieved a warrant for murder it was dismissed along with the child endangerment charges and assualt charges. The joke for a prosecutor was okay with that and decided to only charge him with involuntary manslaughter since he eventually decided to confess. (who wouldn’t have written a confession under those circumstances). He did his four years on the nose (they gave him time served as well) and not even two weeks after his release, he was picked up on burglary charges. He recieved 4 more years (hmph, my nieces death was categorized with burlary) and according to the gossip mill he has filed for judicial release and it is most likely to be granted.
You dont have to read our comments. The media is what turns all cases in an uproar!
I am just writing on behalf of the families involved. Please stop commenting on the case. Let Nick rest in peace, and Brent serve his time. It’s hard enough to deal with the loss then for them to have to see these comments makes it even harder. To set the record straight, there was no fight. It was a sucker-punch. The old stories from last year were derrived from not knowing what had happened yet as they searched for mr. goode for two weeks until he turned himself in. Then ludacris stories came out in the news, all untrue, as newscasters like to print stories without the facts. The brothers did not touch Mr. Goode, as Chris was hailing a cab at the time of the incident. However the family appreciates the support and condolences; it is over, and please let both parties move on. Thank you.
Only a few things to say in this case. The guy who punched the sheriffs dog got 6 months and this guy only gets 60 days.. How can that be when you killed someone. I don’t think the judicial system works that well anymore and the judges we have are incompentent. If an accident “okay” but this was a “fight”. You have a choice not to hit and he decided to throw the punch. He should be held accountable for the death of another human being!!
How much time did he serve? Only if you can/want to talk about it.
I agree, I can understand how it is possible to become frustrated with a child, but to actually hurt a small fragile being just blows my mind.
I am so sorry for you and your family Maumi.I see now why you are active in childrens’ issues. It sickens me to the core of my being when people hurt innocents.
I AM SO TIRED OF ALL THESE DRUNKS GETTING OFF WITH A SLAP ON THE WRIST. ITS TIME TO CHANGE THE LAWS AND MAKE PEOPLE PAY FOR WHAT THEY DO.
THIS SENTENCE IS IDIOTIC, WHY NOT JUST SENTENCE HIM TO KENNETH’S SPA
