LORAIN, Ohio—An Illinois man is facing felony drug charges after Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers seized 31 pounds of BC Bud marijuana, valued at more than $124,000 during a traffic stop yesterday on the Ohio Turnpike in Amherst Township in Lorain County.

Troopers stopped a 2009 Toyota Prius with New York registration for speed and marked lanes violations westbound on the Ohio Turnpike near milepost 149 at approximately 4:23 p.m. Monday. Troopers observed criminal indicators and a Patrol drug-sniffing canine alerted to the vehicle. A probable cause search revealed 31 pounds of BC Bud marijuana in the trunk.

The driver, Jose Duran, 32, of Aurora, Ill., was charged with possession of drugs, a third-degree felony. Duran was incarcerated in the Lorain County Jail. If convicted, he could face up to 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

BC Bud marijuana is one of the most potent strains of cannabis, which is usually cultivated in British Columbia. It has a THC content of 30 percent as compared to only four percent in traditional marijuana.

Through August 2009, the Patrol seized more than 3 million grams of illegal narcotics valued at approximately $19.3 million. In 2008, the Patrol seized more than 5.2 million grams of illegal narcotics valued at approximately $47.5 million.

He was stopped for speeding and marked lane violations.  Leave off the “fishing” and he was still stopped for speeding.  I’m glad they pulled this idiot over and just happened to find the weed.  Kill two birds with one stone on this traffic stop.  Good job.

There’s news for ya!  Marijuana and prostitution….been trying to stop both since the dawning of time.  It won’t happen but the cops make too much money not to at least give it a shot.  How about less cops looking for that and more looking for child abusers, rapists, robbers, you know, the things that really matter????  Wow!  Now there’s a concept!!!!!

marked lanes is a patrols term for fishing. he likely did nothing wrong and they got something this time, but we never hear how many fishing trips go without a catch. i had a friend have a car be “hit” on by columbus k-9 and there was nothing in the car and the car was left with scratches on the driver door where the cops hand hit. bc budd stands for british columbia and its barely illegal and definetly not worth 4000 a pound. bc is aka high times weed.

BC Bud isn’t a strain of cannabis, it is a generic classification.  Purple Haze is an example of a strain.

Also, there is close to a 0 percent chance this cannabis has a THC content of 30 percent, much more likely to be in the 12-19% range.  A 30% strain would be close to record breaking.

I would also like to know what “criminal indicators” were used.  Courts have said that probable cause can consist of “suspect looked nervous” and you don’t need a warrant for drug dogs, as anything they detect is considered by the courts to be in plain view.

Note to wannabe smugglers:  Don’t speed and swerve.
