COLUMBUS, Ohio—An overnight robbery ended in a police-involved shooting and a suspect’s death early Friday, according to authorities.

NBC 4’s Matt Alvarez reported with the FAST FACTS.

CPD officers were returning from a surveillance operation around 2:40 a.m. Friday when they heard a gunshot coming from the BP gas station at the corner of East Broad Street and North James Road.

Officers were driving through the intersection when they heard the gunshot and observed a man running from the parking lot with a gun, according to a CPD release.

“They just happened to be driving southbound on the road. When they approached the intersection, they heard one gunshot,”  CPD Sergeant Rich Weiner said.

CPD said the suspect was robbing a man in the gas-station parking lot at gunpoint.

Officers chased the suspect to the rear of a nearby CVS pharmacy parking lot where he was shot, CPD said.

He was transported to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. He died from his injuries a short time later.

A handgun was recovered at the scene, authorities said.

“Once we get done with all of the interviews, talk to the witnesses—we have multiple witnesses. We’re trying to determine exactly what they saw—whether they saw the robbery on the lot, whether they saw the shooting with police. So, we have a lot of information that we’ve got to go through,” CPD Sergeant Rich Weiner said.

CPD later identified the suspect as 30-year-old James Anthony Hill Jr. CPD said Hill had prior arrests.

Officers were not injured during the incident.

Weiner said officers were wearing tactical gear during the incident.

“I want to make clear that officers were in tactical gear, which clearly marked them as being police officers. So, there’s no way the suspect should have—it shouldn’t have been misconstrued that there were random people engaging. He should have known these were police officers,” Weiner said.

NBC 4 initially reported the suspect fire shots at officers, but CPD said that remained under investigation.

North James Road at East Broad Street remained closed for several hours while police investigated the incident.

There have been six officer-involved shootings, involving CPD, since January 2009.

The officers involved in the incident were Officer David Younker and Officer James Sandford.

Younker is assigned to 10 Precinct B Company and has been with the division for nine years.

Sandford is assigned to the Strategic Response Bureau and has been with the division for 20 years.

As in all police involved shootings, the involved officer(s) will receive mandated psychological support counseling. Officers are also afforded an opportunity to take leave time to assist in recovery from a traumatic experience.

The incident is being investigated by the critical incident response team (made up of specially trained investigators from the homicide squad), and the firearms/police-involved death review board.

The final investigative package will be forwarded to the Columbus Division of Police for review.

Hey Thema, practice what you preach.  “Please read, read and then read it again”
The article stated that the officers heard a gun shot come from the BP and then saw your cousing running from the BP.  Sounds like he took a shot at the victim to me.  And then you the nerve to say “He was commenting a crime, but he did not kill anyone so therefore there was no a reason for him to be killed as he WAS RUNNING AWAY.“  Maybe its me but if you shot at someone, you are trying to kill them.  He was a danger to the public and he deserved what he got.  He could have dropped the gun and stood there till the cops arrested him, he made the situation that got him killed.
So don’t get all holier than thou at me, I am not the least bit concerned or sorry he is dead, just wish it happened sooner.

And actually I have jaywalked, probably thousands of times.  But I have never been arrested for drug offenses, DV & Assault(several times), violation of protection orders (several times), aggravated menacing, Carry Concealed Weapons, Possession of Cocaine, and Possession of fake drugs like your POS cousin has been.  And anyone can look this up at www.fcmcclerk.com

dear thelma
please read, read, and then read my comment again.
when he was committing crimes you worried not that his victims will suffer but that HE will get in trouble. you knew he was doing wrong things but you DIDN’T report him to police. you are saying you are proud of the officers and at the same time you are implying misconduct on their side. you are saying your cousin was a criminal but you are going to speak highly of him. you will not get much understanding here and the reason is that what you are saying LACKS ELEMENTARY LOGIC.
the truth is he got exactly what he was asking for.

To Police Officer’s wife and EVERYONE ELSE:

Before you respond to this comment please read, read, and then read it again. For some reason not one person comprehended anything I wrote. I am going to place the blame on those of you that did not pass Literature in Middle School.

Not one time did I say what my cousin was doing was right because it wasn’t. Not one time did I state that my cousin was the person in our family with issues I clearly stated that EVERYONE has a family member with issues. I in no way claimed that the reason my cousin did what he did was because of someone else. Not one time did I take the blame from him to place on another.

I clearly stated that before you place an IGNORANT comment think of the family. You want me to feel overjoyed that I will never see my cousin alive because he was committing a crime? He was commenting a crime, but he did not kill anyone so therefore there was no a reason for him to be killed as he WAS RUNNING AWAY.

Speedbuggy: Not one time in the news did I hear that he shot at the robbery victim did you have inside sources? If so can I speak with them because if I am correct if he was robbing the person what stopped him from killing him? My heart goes out to the person who was being robbed because no one deserves that type of treatment. Yes he had 17 misdeanor’s, but do you know what a misdeamor could consist of? Jaywalking is a misdemeanor. So are you saying you never jaywalked? So because you jaywalked should we convict on EVERYTHING you do after that happens? Exactly.

I am going to end my comments with this last statement. I will always have pride in the police officers that place their life on the lines each and everyday. I can do nothing but thank them for a job that I know I could not ever do. I am a true Christian and I don’t wish death on anyone and I would not ever be happy that a person lost their life. So if that what gets any of you moron’s off please continue on.

I will always speak highly of my cousin and I will always love the person I knew for my whole life. You can continue to post comments after this, but I am done wasting my time with people who are not worth my time.

I wish this would happen more often.
The punk had a gun he robbed someone and im sure he pointed it at the officers so he had to be dropped.
That is why they carry guns.

He made a choice to do something he knew was wrong and he paid for it with his life. Would that all scumbags have the same consequences.

It doesn’t matter what his background was. There are 400 people for each of one of him, WITH THE SAME EXACT BACKGROUND!!, that didn’t rob someone at gunpoint last night.

First, no I am not a counselor…my job does not give much positive reinforcement and happy outcomes are relative.
Yeah, we lived it all…but again, that is relative.  My turning point was about age thirteen when a probation officer and a caseworker got into an arguement over what was to be done with me.  Thank God the one understanding what was happening at home won..for me, but not for all the others.  Thank God there were volunteers that gave of themselves for others.  Sadly there were not and are not enough.
So, opinions and emotions will remain the same, but if people insists upon doing things the way they have always been done they are going to get the same results.

Crickett, are experiences are not that different in some regards;  It appears I am older and the same opportunities did not exist for us as children, as young parents.  I just have a very strong need to validate every person who crossed my path regardless of how briefly, every person that came before me and made the way a bit easier.  Maybe it is my age, I just refuse to believe I did this on my own; I refuse to believe there is a moral difference between me and those who have not made it.
I accept responsibility for my actions and strongly beleive we are responsible for our actions but if we as a society have decided systems are to be available to address issues, they should be held accountable for their in actions.

Crickett:  Unfortunately not everyone is born with the ability to reason and come out on top as you did.  Can’t you see that it is your own personal constitution as a human being that helped you?

I believe that I am being somewhat miss understood.  I do not in any way condone what this man did.  I feel horrible for the officer who landed the fatal shot and for everyone involved.  Yes, I believe that by the time you are 30 you make your decisions good or bad.  This poor decision ended his life.  I believe that people who make these kinds of decisions need to suffer the consequences to the fullest extent of the law.

That being said, why can’t we try, as a society to help our neighbors?  We have, as a whole, closed our eyes to the less fortunate, the criminals and the elderly.  It is so sad.  Perhaps you already have, but you have a great knowledge coming through what you came through.  You could help young people or anyone in your position make a change from a poor decision to a good decision, my God they need our help.  Imagine if we could all help just one person how much better the world would be.

I’m sorry, I got a little wordy there, just understand that I do support the laws and feel that justice should be served.

I didn’t have that one persone and I took the high road that’s what I was trying to say earlier.  So I stayed in a shelter for a while.  Have you ever been in one of those.  Believe or not there’s not a lot of people to talk to.  You can talk and talk but a person is gonna do what a person is gonna do and they do wrong they need to pay for their actions.  Unfortunaly in this case he got shot.  But like I said before “live by the gun, die by the gun”.  Although when used respectfully and properly a gun isn’t a bad thing to have in my opinion.  He chose the cowards way.  People make CHOICES not their up bringing or because no one was there.  I’m sure he had family that loved him.

Well some ppl have made the high rd most likely becuz a positive influence came into thier life.  If everyone would take one day out of the week to attempt to make a positive influence towards the children of today, i would imagine the outcome could possibly restore morals and the ability to think about actions before they are carried out, (consequences) and maybe one day we could actually have days where there is no bad news stories for the papers to write about.

You can be a good parent and do your best to teach wrong from right and sometimes they still turn out doing bad things.  I’m not saying all but there are those cases.  You can come from a bad backround and take the high road.  I think the point that is being made here is people have CHOICES!!  Whether to do bad or to do good.  You choose to do bad you suffer the consequences, you choose to do good at some point in your life you will be rewarded.  That’s the way life is.  But don’t put down the cop for doing his job.  And don’t defend a man that has a record a mile long who continued to go against the law.  There are parents out there who don’t care and kids get lost, BUT it’s the CHOICES they make when they get older.  If I’m not mistaken I believe that’s the point that some of the others are trying to make.
