UPDATED: Police release the identity of a suspect who is in custody in connection with 14 robberies within the last month.
COLUMBUS, Ohio—For nearly a month, a shotgun-wielding suspect has been terrorizing Columbus-area businesses. According to Columbus police, he’s responsible for as many as 14 robberies at coffee shops, restaurants, convenient stores and gas stations.
The suspect was arrested after the latest robbery Tuesday that led to a police pursuit and crash.
The Certified gas station on Frank Road was robbed by an armed man at about 2 a.m. Tuesday, police said. He fled the scene with an undetermined amount of money.
An officer spotted the suspect’s vehicle leaving the gas station and officers pursued the suspect.
The suspect ran a stop sign and crashed the vehicle into a tree about a mile away at Brown and Dyer roads, according to Franklin Township police.
The suspect was able to flee on foot and remained on the loose after a police search of the area.
Police said evidence taken from the vehicle led investigators to a location on Thurman Avenue where the suspect frequently visited.
Later Tuesday, police, SWAT and ATF agents arrested Christopher Himelrick in a stolen vehicle at Marion and Lockbourne roads.
During interviews, police said, Himelrick allegedly confessed his involvement in the numerous robberies associated with the serial robber case.
Himelrick was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated robbery.
Police said more charges will be sought through the Franklin County Grand Jury in the near future.
NBC 4 learned Wednesday afternoon that the shotgun used in some of the robberies was a BB gun that was modified to look like a shotgun.
It was also learned that Himelrick is currently on parole for a previous burglary.
He was taken to Grant Medical Center with injuries after his arrest, but officials expect him to be transported to jail on Wednesday.

Agreed maumi. That’s unintelligent’s answer for everything. Maybe if the suspect shot witnesses he may have gotten away longer. I’m thankful he HADN’T shot anyone.
shoot em all huh? Maybe we should just start lining people up on a firing range for just looking guilty.
They should have shot him.
Actually, it was my daughter’s car but it creates a real hardship for a decent person who depends on their automobile to get to and from work to have some low life take it and use it to commit crimes and then crash it. I’m just glad they caught him before he injured someone.
Thank u Cathy for bringing the truth to light. Some folks know it all. Sorry to hear it was your vehicle, that sucks he had to wreck it. I know you wish they would’ve tried to handle the situation a little differently, although all they wanted was the suspect (whom had fled anyway) and could’ve care less of the fact that he severly damaged your vehicle. There may be some type of program that helps you get a replacement vehicle, even though I know it is not the same as the vehicle you had and most likely invested plenty of money into. Reality sucks.
I’m sorry to read he stole the car.
He needs removed from our societal environment for the crimes before he stole the car and for stealing the car, whether he wrecked it or not.

The car he crashed was stolen because it was stolen from my driveway, so he wrecked an innocent person’s car.
The car he crashed was stolen because it was stolen from my driveway, so he wrecked an innocent person’s car. The idiot was caught because he left his wallet in the car when he fled from the police.
yea….ok….the parole board is suppose to know when an idiot is going to offend again. Dang I didn’t know they were mind readers. I say lock him back up and he will have to most likely finish the time from his previous sentence as well. They need to make him work a real job so that he can pay retitution. No one was hurt, thank God he is not one of those minimum wage murderers.
“It was also learned that Himelrick is currently on parole for a previous…“
Wow! What a surprise! Who could have thought of that! :)
Another brilliant job of Ohio Parole Board!
He had to know once he fled the vehicle he was toast. Even if you get away, the police have your vehicle which means they have your name, address, pretty much everything
