Prosecutors: Mom’s Accused Murderer Can Understand

DAYTON, Ohio - Prosecutors in Dayton say there’s no need for a second competency exam for a man accused of killing a woman in her home and kidnapping her 4-year-old son.

Montgomery County prosecutors said in a court filing on Thursday that 22-year-old Charlie Myers of Columbus is capable of understanding court proceedings.

But defense attorneys say during his first evaluation, Myers could not answer questions about basic issues such as how police found him or the purpose of a trial.

A judge has said he will decide by next week whether to grant the defense a second exam.

Myers is charged with aggravated murder and could face the death penalty. Police say he killed a 29-year-old woman in January, kidnapped her son and left him at an Interstate 70 rest stop.
