A crimestoppers tip leads to the arrest of a suspect in connection with thefts from a mausoleum.
COLUMBUS, Ohio—A man suspected in connection with a series of thefts from a mausoleum on the city’s south side has been arrested.
On Sunday, October 11, 2009, and Monday, October 12, 2009, someone broke into the Greenlawn Abbey Mausoleum located at 700 Greenlawn Avenue.
Once inside the mausoleum, 20 bronze gates were removed from crypts. Each gate weighs at least 100 lbs and dates back to the early 1900’s and displayed the name of the person interred. The gates are more valuable intact, but may have been cut up and sold as scrap metal.
Investigators identified 41-year-old Mark Daniel Mitchell as having sold parts of some of the stolen gates to a Central Ohio scrap dealer. A warrant was issued for his arrest for receiving stolen property.
As the result of tips to Columbus police and Central Ohio Crime Stoppers, Mitchell was taken into custody Sunday at 1840 Genessee Avenue. Officials said they expect to make additional arrests in this case.
He appeared in court Monday morning. He pleaded not guilty and bond was set at $500,000.
A trial date was set for Nov. 10.

Whatnext, yes, that did occur to me and hurray to the person if he/she did.
1joyt : did it ever occur to you that the scrap dealer may have been the one who turned him in.
The suspect has multiple priors, including hit-skip and multiple charges of driving without a license. I hope he doesn’t get out for a while.
Ok, please tell me what is in a Mausoleum that is worth stealing? I can’t believe people steal from the dead. How sick.
Mickey4 - did you see the photo of that 55 year old Dayton woman who had sex with a 13 year old? - she looked to be at least 75.
LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER FAILED EXAMPLE OF OUR WAR ON DRUGS
I hope if the courts let him off easy, the spirits whose burial area was damaged go after him full force. Scrap dealers should be in trouble as well-people steal manhole covers and they buy them.
Mickey4,
Crimestoppers was incorrect. He is 41 years old. The article has been reflected to include the correct age.
Thanks,
Mickey4, We received our information from Central Ohio Crimestoppers and the release said he was 31 years old. I will double check with them.
The Dispatch is reporting that Mark Daniel Mitchell is 41.
