Not one respondent on here expressed that it was ok to drink and drive. We are living in a time when money for police and firefighters is in short supply, like another person pointed out on here these officers would have probably been able to arrest at least as many drunk drivers while patroling than they did with this checkpoint.Checkpoints are unconstitutional and only those that do not watch tv and or read the paper are going to drink and drive through a checkpoint.
It bothers me that responsible people(like myself)that would never drink and drive are being detained from going about their business traveling from one place to another. My constitution guarantees me that right without hindrance, regardless of liberal/creative interpretation of such. There is a reason our forefathers built these protections into the doctrine that our country was founded upon.
Once again-it’s never ok to drink and drive. It’s selfish, dangerous and all kinds of other descriptive words.Throw the book at them.Legislate tougher laws.Put a cop with a breathalizer outside of every bar in the county and you’d have a much greater chance of stopping the criminal act of driving drunk, and also meet the standard of probable cause to assume someone may be drinking. They all have to drive away from these bars, don’t they?

I do not believe that was a waste of money.  2 drunk drivers were arrested, possibly saving a few lives.  What if one of those drunk drivers killed a member or members of YOUR family?  Lives were potentially saved this weekend, I’d say it is worth the cost.  People gamble, and they’ll continue to drive drunk if they don’t get caught.

checkpoints are a big waste of money and time. im sure if each cop there was put in a car they each could easily get two whole dui arrests each in roamimg patrols. under the new law a person cant have a beer an hour because they will test above .08. one beer doesnt impair one but will cost one alot of time and money. then if you really only had a few and pass the field test they ask you to blow anyhow and still loss your licence. i feel for those who lost loved ones to these accidents, however with budget shortfalls everyplace they should do away with these things. do the math for each officers pay and equipment and two duis dont add up to me.

It’d be nice if there was some way to test for impairment vs. ‘legally drunk’.  Of course, drivers that drive like crap when perfectly sober might rightfully lose their licenses, too ;)

The Relic: I agree with your sentencing idea, but not with checkpoints. We aren’t in Nazi Germany-in the U.S. you’re presumed innocent and have to have “just cause” to be pulled over.

Amazing, people upset with the police being pro-active with getting drunks off the streets.

I’ve had a bellyful of people whining about these checkpoints. Having lost my father to a drunken driver, I’m more than happy to see these scum pulled off the streets, even it if does mean a minor inconvenience like a checkpoint.

Believe me, if I had my way I’d see these “people” who choose to drive drunk and kill someone in their cars locked up for the rest of their lives.

laura-officers aren’t being pulled off the streets to work these checkpoints, they are manned by mostly auxillary officers and some working special duty. whether the public sees it as good or bad p.r., these never net many good arrests…

A closer look at the story would have revealed a total waste of money. How much did it cost to set up this “checkpoint”? Couldn’t they have found more criminal activity patroling the streets?

Hey look at it this way.. if you want to roll around in your car.. it is a PRIVILEGE TO DRIVE A CAR!!!!  not a right… and if it takes PAPERS to make everyone safe..then so be it.  If they advertise the checkpoint in advance as they always do…...IT IS there own dang fault!!!!!!
