Thieves break into a local church early Friday and steal more than $1,000 that was meant to fund mission causes.
DELAWARE, Ohio—Members of a local church were picking up the pieces after a suspect or suspects broke in overnight and made off with more than $1,000 that was collected for worthy causes.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
Pastor Troy Palermo didn’t get a lot of sleep overnight Friday. He found out the hard way that even churches aren’t sacred when it comes to criminals.
“You’d like to think that people have more respect for a church than they would for other places, but obviously it’s a sign of the day in time we live in,” Palermo said.
A suspect or suspects broke into LifePoint Church on West William Street in Delaware at about 1:30 a.m.
The suspect(s) didn’t have to work hard to gain entrance: Palermo said the suspect took a landscaping stone and threw it through the front door.
Once inside the breezeway, the suspect(s) threw the stone through a second locked door to get into the main building.
When a neighbor’s light flicked on, though, Palermo said the suspect(s) likely became spooked.
“Just took what they could and got away,” Palermo said.
What the suspect(s) could get away with included as much as $1,500.
The church had been collecting the donations in a sculpture since Easter.
Palermo took photos that show glass and left over change covering the floor.
That money wasn’t for the church, though.
“It goes toward our mission causes we’re part of around the globe—places like Peru, South Africa, Honduras and Cuba,” he said. At least, the money would have went toward the missions.
The church also canceled day care Friday for the some 65 children it cares for each day in the Toddler Inn.
Palermo said they’ll clean up mess, fix the doors and get past this day. He only hoped justice would be served.

I really appreciate that Amy. We are so glad to have you all be a part of our family at Toddler Inn. I take it very personally that someone did this, as it affects each and every one of us, daycare and church. I consider the daycare a second home to all of the kids, and someone has taken advantage of our space and violated it. I treat our center the same way I would treat my own home, and the shape it was in this morning (and still even now) was just not suitable and safe enough to care for your children in. I really appreciate your understanding of just how hard this truly is.
Blair, you and your staff wonderful. We found you for a reason, you’ve been such a positive in our lives! Toddler Inn is an amazing place for my child to learn and grow in. Thank GOD that nobody was injured. You have a very tough, but I’m sure very rewarding job and you are so appreciated! Don’t apologize for the ignorance of another lost soul! We as parents understand that it can’t be helped. Keep up the good work you’re doing everyday! (Amy, Evan’s mom ;-)
I agree. There were a great many of us who were put out today due to the selfish actions of another. To the parents of children who depend on us to provide child care, the children who were looking forward to learning and playing today, my staff who were ready to work today, and the members of the church who were excited to be a part of something wonderful by helping others, I apologize tremendously for the inconvenience. And to you, whoever helped themself to what was meant to help others, I hope you can someday realize just how many people you truly did affect today, and I hope you can live with that.
Is somebody that pathetic that they’d steal from a church and daycare center?! Really? When they find the person, maybe they should pay restitution to all of us parents who may have missed a day of work because of their disgusting actions! SHAME ON YOU! GET A JOB LIKE THE REST OF US!
