Woman Says Group Of Men Assaulted Her In Schiller Park

A woman says she was attacked and assaulted at gunpoint while exercising in Schiller Park overnight.

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Many Central Ohioans use local parks to spend time outside with their families or exercise.

That’s what a local woman was doing Wednesday night when she came face to face with five men in an attack at Schiller Park.

The woman said she was attacked, possibly by as many as five men, and assaulted at gunpoint.

Police said that despite what happens with an income tax increase vote in August, parks won’t be ignored, adding that there will be no cuts in patrols.

“Every precinct has a new bike crew. They’re able to maneuver through the parks a little easier than a normal cruiser would,“ said Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner.

As summer progresses, there will be even more patrols around parks.

The Schiller Park assault occurred at about midnight, but technically, the parks are supposed to be empty after 11 p.m.

“Anytime that you’re by yourself, you’re walking on the street, not to say that you’re going to become a victim, but you know what? Always use the buddy system,“ Weiner said.

Using the buddy system won’t make a park in the middle of the night as safe as during the day, but there would be less of a chance of becoming a victim.

Fixfireleo: Miller and Kelton don’t have a corner in common.  These streets do not intersect.

Catinthehat:  No on critized her in the news story.  He just states to use the buddy system.  Not a bad idea when you are in the park after hours that close to the hood, huh?

Bodie says it best.  She is probably lying.  Hence why she probably gave conflicting accounts of the incident and NO description.

You know what? Screw you, Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner. A woman is attacked and all we get is criticism of HER actions. How about a description of the attackers instead? We have a number of assailants, 5 and know a gun was involved. What else, flatfoot?

I advocate OPEN CARRY that way no permit is required and the streets and parks would be free of scum.
Yet we have Mayor Mike wanting to build another park.

I do believe this woman is LYING.

Well tell you what everyone i live not too far from schiller and everytime i have been there especially during the day the park is full of people but not so much at night. If you are a woman i do,nt know if i would want to be in this park at night alone.I think the buddy systen might be a good thing for this because the park is s ghosttown after dark so get a buddy.

True enough, open carry is legal in Ohio. You might pull it off at night when folks can’t see you so well, but in broad daylight be prepared to be hassled by cops at every turn, whether they know the law or not. If some old woman calls the cops, you’ll be arrested and charged with “inciting panic”.  Also, anyone open carrying will likely be the first target of a thug with a gun.  However the bottom line is that EVERYONE has a duty to protect themselves and their loved ones. It’s not the duty of the police. In fact, the courts have stated in more than a few cases that the police have “no specific duty to protect any given individual”.  So arm up and be ready, Mikey Coleman doesn’t care one whit about your safety.

“. . .technically, the parks are supposed to be empty after 11 p.m.“  Isn’t it more like literally the parks are marked “closed after 11:00 p.m.?“  I haven’t read the signs in a while, and I can’t find any mention of this on the park website.

At any rate, as much as all areas *should* be safe for everyone all the time, that’s not the world we live in.  No one deserves to be attacked no matter what the circumstances, but we should all use common sense and not put ourselves in harm’s way.

I’d like to see a followup story on this once more of the facts are in and/or there are further developments.

Educate yourself people! You don’t need a concealed carry permit to carry a gun that is in plain sight. If you are out that late jogging, put your handgun in a holster and put it on your belt or strapped to your leg as long as it is not concealed and there is no sign posted that guns are not allowed in the parks there is NOTHING anyone can do to you, including the cops! Ohio is an ‘open carry’ state! There are only half a dozen states that do not permit open carry!Just be prepared for a lot of people around you to panic when they see the gun and they may call the cops and the cops may stop you because, unfortunately a lot of them are just as uneducated about our open carry laws!
