Forest Acres (WLTX) - Forest Acres police and Richland County deputies say the suspect in a fatal shooting at an ATM machine went back to his house Thursday night, and that’s where they arrested him.
Forest Acres Police Chief Gene Sealy spoke about the arrest of 37-year-old Kendrick Nesbitt at a Friday morning news conference.
Sealy says Nesbitt was arrested at 10:15 p.m. Thursday at 104 Bailey Street, the same address where he had lived from time to time—and where he’d been seen the day before, just hours after the killing.
According to officers, the home had been under surveillance since he was identified as the prime suspect in the case, and officers were waiting for him when he returned.
Nesbitt was arrested without incident. Investigators said Friday that he has implicated himself in the crime.
Sealy said murder warrants were issued earlier for Nesbitt, and more charges are expected.
Officers say Nesbitt shot and killed 55-year-old Lynne Thompson of Elgin at 8:45 Wednesday morning at the Bank of America in Trenholm Plaza, which is in the 5000 block of Trenholm Road.
According to officers, Nesbitt approached Thompson as she was parked at the drive-thru ATM. Detectives say he then pulled out a gun and shot her five times. Officers say the suspect pulled the woman out of her vehicle, climbed inside the van, and drove off.
Thompson was taken to the hospital where she later died.
Officers say at the time of the robbery, the bank was not open but there were employees inside. There was also someone behind the victim waiting in line.
Investigators say Nesbitt then drove the woman’s white 2001 Honda Odyssey to Cox Street, where he abandoned it. Eyewitnesses at that scene say they saw him get out of the van with the woman’s purse.
K-9 units tracked the man’s scent, and found the victim’s purse, but no gunman.
Nesbitt was then seen Wednesday night, hours after the killing, at the Bailey Street location in the Colony Apartments.
Sealy says witnesses saw media reports Wednesday night, and were able to confirm for law enforcement his identity.
Authorities also released a surveillance photo of Nesbitt taken at the ATM machine.
Nesbitt is originally from the Spartanburg area. He has a criminal history, including an arrest and conviction for armed robbery, and many other types of arrests, including a strong armed robbery charge from January of 2008
