3 Columbus Charter Schools To Close

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Three Columbus charter schools are scheduled to close at the end of the academic year due to poor performance.

The schools were notified by the Ohio Department of Education Aug. 25 when state report cards were issued.

The schools include George Washington Carver Preparatory Academy on Sunbury Road, Montessori Renaissance Experience on Loretta Avenue and Scholars Preparatory and Career Center on Mount Vernon Avenue.

“Basically, depending on what grade levels the schools offer, there were certain thresholds that had to be met, which were updated in HB 1,“ said Scott Blake, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Education.

There were 16 charter schools statewide that were notified last month.

None of the local administrators would do on-camera interviews.

Calls to George Washington Carver Prep were not returned.

A lawyer for Montessori Renaissance says the law was applied inappropriately to that charter school.

Scholar Prep’s lawyer says the school is focusing on providing quality education to all of its students and continuing to improve its test scores as it has over the years.

Here is a list of all of the notified schools in Ohio:
Academy Of Business & Tech
Academy of Cleveland
Academy Of Dayton

New Day Academy Boarding & Day School
