Bed Bugs Send Residents To Hotel

Bed bugs are infesting a southwest Columbus apartment complex.

COLUMBUS, Ohio—The Franklin County Health Department inspected an apartment complex on Friday where, residents say, bed bugs aren’t their only problem.

Residents say their other problem is getting their landlord to do something about the unwelcome guests.

Chris White said he has tried everything to get rid of bed bugs at his apartment—including four cans of bug spray and pesticide.

“It’s so bad. I’ve got a 5-year-old daughter who’s gotten bitten multiple times with bed bugs and stuff and we sent her to school and the school sent her home because of all the bumps over her stomach and stuff,“ White said.

Residents of The Pointe Apartments on Harrisburg Pike say they have paid for hotel rooms rather than sleep in their own beds.

“We’re paying $510 a month. We should be able to sleep in our own house without worrying about tomorrow, is my kid going to wake up from head to toe with bites,“ White said.

Thursday night, White rented a hotel room for his family and a neighbor, who found the bed bugs all over his son’s pillow.

NBC 4 was there when the Franklin County Health Department showed up to inspect the apartments.

White called officials after an exterminator hired by the property managers didn’t show up May 6.

The property manager wasn’t immediately available for comment.

Neighbors are helping each other look for bed bugs in their cushions and mattresses.

“It’s not my responsibility to do this. It’s the apartment complex. I’m helping friends out,“ he said.

Residents received a letter from the complex officials saying that exterminators would arrive on May 6, but residents said the exterminator never showed up.

Franklin County health officials went door-to-door inspecting apartments.

For the second time since last fall, health officials are issuing orders for pest control as soon as possible.

After repeated phone calls to the leasing office, requesting the manager’s side of the story, NBC 4 was told the owner “does not wish to comment at this time.“

Bed bugs are parasitic insects that prefer human blood.

They are not an indication of poor housekeeping and can be found anywhere.

about two years ago we had to go through this very thing. we were renting from a company called welcome home buyers, about 2 weeks after we moved into this house i started noticing small red itchy bumps when i was in bed well one night i actually seen one crawling on my arm, well the next day i called the property manager and told him the situation. he was so helpful, they sent an exterminator out the next day, well we found out that those little are extreamly hard to get rid of and they sent the company out to do a second treatment. thank god that and trowing our bed out took care of them.  well about six months later we notified the company that we were moving, we gave them our notice and a month later cleaned out our things, cleaned the house and moved, well when we tried to get our deposit back, we were informed that we lost it because they said we were responsible for the extermination bill. so we found out that they werent being that helpful at all, just slumlords.

simple to solve.  get a judge to order the landlord to move into the apartments until the problem is solved.

Not far at all really, unfortunatly one moves in from there or vice versa and they all move stinkin roaches. I am just tired ot the landlords not doing a thing about it. They do not care one bit and it doesnt matter how much a person complains. I had to call the Columbus health Department, my bathtub is continously peeling up this crap they sprayed on it and it is causing huge rashes on my girl’s bodies. I went as far as to take the peeling’s to my doctor he did lab and then checked the same thing on my daughters bodies and it is what is causing the issue. I have to use bactroban which is a staph creame.

The condo’s I live in have had this problem going on for a long time. Knock on wood I dont have them and hope never do, but the landlords here dont give a *ahem*. The property we live in used to be owned by Tom Oleander and the new ones, ARE NO BETTER. They just let 4 new tier 3 sex offenders move in here as well, and are not fixing anything anymore let alone bedbugs. Its insane, and I am trying to move but kinda hard to do when people want so much money per month and HUGE deposits, in this economy they are asking for way to much.

Resist pitting landlords against tennants in the bedbug war.  Only a coordinated cooperative effort of all residents and landlord simultaneously has any hope of success - and it usually takes three tries with chemicals plus meticulous mechanical removal from all personal effects.  The bugs reside anywhere: furniture, books, baseboards. They travel to adjacent apartment units along plumbing. Moving to a hotel and expecting a landlord to fix with a little spray only disperses the bugs, wastes money and shifts blame.  Encourage informed cooperation against bed bugs.

I’ve lost my job. Money getting very low at this time of month. Still have nine days till my next unemployment check. I’m thinking of getting the black skillet out and frying up a batch.

for accurate information on treatment go to the http://centralohiobedbugs.org/.
You are only making it worse by using store bought bug sprays, it needs professionals.

Great, now they’ve brought the bugs to the hotel. We’ve outlawed all the effective insecticides, now we complain about bugs.

Ugh! These little critters are NASTY!! We lived in a complex on the west side and the master bedroom was infested with them! We had to throw out all of our bedroom furniture, mattress, etc! Spent HUNDREDS on laundering, new mattress and dry cleaning!! Good luck to these poor souls, I do not wish them upon anyone!
