Big Ten Baseball Tournament Up For Grabs Next Year
COLUMBUS, Ohio —With Columbus’ Huntington Park playing host to the Big Ten Baseball Tournament this week, a Big Ten official tells NBC 4 that as impressive as the city and stadium are, next year’s tournament site is still undetermined.
Assistant Big Ten Conference Commissioner Scott Chipman says he and others will wait until after the weekend to evaluate Columbus’ prospects for retaining hosting duties for the tournament in future years.
The Greater Columbus Sports Commission says hosting the baseball tournament has the potential to bring millions of dollars into the city in the form of tourism spending.
This marks the first time in 15 years that the baseball tournament has been hosted at a neutral site. Indianapolis serves as host of the annual Big Ten Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament.
One University of Illinois fan told that Columbus was not neutral enough with the large Ohio State fanbase in the city. He suggested the tournament continue to rotate sites, rather than establishing a permanent home in Columbus.
