Local Children Face Summer Without Pools, Rec Centers
COLUMBUS, Ohio—School is out, and thousands of Columbus kids and young adults face a long summer without access to pools and recreation centers.
It was tough news for grandmother Vonnie Washington to deliver to her granddaughter Samantha.
Samantha has been coming to the Indian Mound Community Rec Center on Parsons Avenue for the past five years.
But when she arrived in early June, the center was closed.
It was one of several recreation centers the city of Columbus shutdown in order to make budget.
“It is just a shame. These kids have nothing to do and no where to go,“ Washington said.
“I really miss my friends and all the activities we used to do at the rec center,“ Samantha said.

Im so sick about hearing that the kids dont have any where to go!! I have 3 kids and I find alot of free things for them to do over the summer. You have to do your research!!
How about the summer reading club!!! Also, as far as the older kids go. GO GET A JOB!!!!
Im tired of paying the bills of other ppl who dont want to work!! Yes I said it DONT WANT TO WORK!! To lazy to do any good for themselves! I understand ppl who CANT WORK, but ppl that can walk, talk and chew gum at the same time can go to work!!
Come on parents do the right thing, go to work, take care of yor kids, show them how it should be done!!
Who cares it saves taxpayers money to maintain and repair the rec centers after the punks go in and tear it up and write on the walls.
Why is it that everyone thinks that they are entitled to get into rec centers and pools for free????? We did not have these problems when we were growing up. If grandma wants to the grandkids to go to the pool, let her buy a pool pass or buy a wading pool/sprinkler for the back yard. These are excellent lessons for kids to learn and maybe they’ll be more appreciative of the things they get and learn that the only thing they are entitled to is to grow up, get a job and provide for themselves and their family.
Nothing to do??? There’s reading, playing outside in your yard, helping grandma, helping your neighbor, etc. There’s lots of things to do. Quit whinning and holding out your hand expecting something for free.
Get a bucket of water and soak your feet.
We also did not have cable TV. We read books from the library. Couldn’t wait for the bookmobile to come in the summer. Once a month.
The children will be just fine. When I was a child, my parents couldn’t afford the 25 cents to enter the public pool, but they paid their bills on time, put shoes on our feet and turned on the water sprinkler. Those children will be just fine. We don’t have to pay to entertain!
