College Students In Abusive Relationships Are Target Of Program

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Stimulus dollars are helping to alert Central Ohio college students to the warning signs for abusive relationships.

The Franklin County Commissioners presented a check for $34,466 to the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence. The group runs the web site http://www.itsabuse.com, which targets college students who may be tolerating physical, verbal or emotional abuse because of a lack of dating experience.

“Sometimes, when it’s your first time away from home in particular, there’s a real vulnerability to relationships that just aren’t working,“ said Commissioner Paula Brooks.

Central Ohio has 130,000 college students, and the new funding will help extend the anti-abuse campaign to the Mount Carmel School of Nursing. The fourth-year program already covers students at Ohio State University, Capital University, DeVry, and Columbus State Community College.
