COLUMBUS, Ohio—A Grove City native is taking unique steps to support our troops, thousands of them, literally.

Ruth Adkins is the founder and president of the Inspiring Alliance Military Support Network.

On Memorial Day, she left Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. for a 3,300-mile trek that will take her across the nation.

Get this: She’s doing most of it on foot and won’t stop until she reaches the San Diego Naval Medical Center this fall.

“There are a lot of needs out there that aren’t being met for our service members, veterans and their families,” Adkins said. “I’ve listened to the stories for years as president of our organization at Inspiring Alliance, and my heart’s been moved.”

She said those needs are medical, financial and educational in nature.

With 500 miles down, Thursday morning, the Grove City native kicked off the Midwest leg of her trek in downtown Columbus at Broad and High streets.

“I’ve still got 2,800 miles to cover from today,” she said.

When all is said and done, she will have covered 12 states during a six-month period.

“The thing I want to encourage people to understand is that communities can come out to join us in this event to show their support for our veterans, and we encourage them as a community to embrace the needs of those veterans that are living in those communities throughout the United States.”

Meanwhile, she hopes to increase support for our troops, one step at a time.
