REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio —When students in a Central Ohio community head back to school in a couple months, several programs that used to be free, won’t be.
Connie Wallace’s daughter, Kaitlin, just finished up eighth grade. While she’s still a few months away from her first day at Reynoldsburg High School, her freshman year is already getting off to a shaky start thanks to budget cuts.
Facing some $11 million in budget cuts, Tuesday night, district school board members took drastic cost-saving steps such as cutting all high-school busing. They also split high-school starting times. Because of traffic and position cuts, juniors and seniors will now start at 8 a.m., freshman and sophomores at 9 a.m.
Wallace says they were planning on having Kaitlin ride to school with an older student but not anymore.
“My husband has to go out of town in the morning,“ she said. “Sometimes I do, so it’s going to be hard for her to get to school. We’re going to have to work it out with friends and family. We thought we had a plan in place.“
But that’s just the beginning. The district will also now charge for programs that were once free. For instance, it will now cost a student $75 to be in choir and orchestra and $150 to be in marching band.
To play sports, junior-high students will have to pay $300 each with a cap of $600. High-school students will have to pay $500 each with a cap of $1,000.
That has Wallace unsure whether Kaitlin will be able to be a cheerleader, as she has for years.
“Five-hundred dollars for sports is expensive. I’ve talked to a lot of parents who aren’t going to be able to let their kids play,“ Wallace said.
Additional cuts made include all general music classes from kindergarten through sixth grade as well as middle-school band and choir programs.
District officials say this is what had to be done after a 15.6-mill levy failed last month.

It’s so odd how this article is about Reynoldsburg but yet most of these comments are about SouthWestern City Schools. Haven’t these comments been written enough on the articles about SWCS? These “facts” weren’t accurate on those articles either but atleast they were relevant. However, I never saw Reynoldsburg people jump on and try to monopolize the discussion. Not everything on here is about SWCS and the unfair taxes that we are paying for secret payraises. This is actually about Reynoldsburg and the cuts they are facing. Maybe we should let them have the forum to discuss their issues.
The true solution in SWCS is to have the whole school board resign TODAY.
how sad that we have to compare the school districts. i don’t have any kids but i did vote for the levy. the reason is we moved in reynoldsburg for the good schools and knowing that usually means a good suburb. our neighbor has 3 kids, will drop 2 of them off at the same time and another an hour later. the issue is now she has 3 different times of picking them up. this is sad, that’s all i can say. when will people realize that without a good education like those of us that are in our 30’s, 40’s and above had without all the worries of paying to play sports, etc. how sad that the kids have to pay for the lack of caring of the voters.
The reason SWCS keeps quiet that there is some “pay to play”(choir, etc)is because their levy/blackmail of students and residents,is really about teacher and administrator raises! All of these talking heads with their PhD’s and masters degrees cannot(will not)come up with any new ideas for funding. They say they want community input, but that has proven to be untrue as they refuse to consider any options other than unconstitutional levies!
They could move to Grove City and not have any option of paying at all. At least they aren’t cutting out the programs all together like SWCS did. Also, $150 for marching band is CHEAP! We have been paying OVER $400 A YEAR for our kids to be in marching band for the last 7 years!!!! Show choir is $500. So, please, do NOT complain! At least you can still play!!!
At least Kaitlin has a choice. She could probally pick up some babysitting jobs and maybe earn the 500 hundred to be a cheerleader. There are some kids who may not have that option. You’ve got people who want pay to play then you have those whiners out there who do have it but cry they can’t afford it.
