Early Education Takes Big Budget Hit
COLUMBUS, Ohio —Central Ohio children rely on the Early Learning Initiative program to prepare them for school.
At Creative World Child Care, more than 40 kids learn through the state-funded program. Upon Gov. Ted Strickland’s signature of the new budget, ELI program participants lose benefits on August 22.
Now, the center’s staff is scrambling to qualify families for benefits through the Title 20 Program also administered through the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
But that won’t be easy. Title 20 also lost some funding and lowered the income qualification amount from 200 percent of the federal poverty to 150 percent.

Another thought. if we follow the logic that parents should be responsible, then stop taking my property taxes for the school system; make the parents pay the way I did for private educations.
Make people responsible for themselves. pSto subsidizing farmers, make people pay the true price of their food. Stop paying for libraries; if you can’t afford a book, don’t read. Do not pay for the medical bills of motorcycle drivers chosing not to wear a helmet. Stop giving dog parks to people unable to provide a nice space for their own animals.
And Lord, please stop subsidizing tobacco farmers and paying to help smokers with their lung cancer…make them pay full price for all of their choices. If they cannot afford to pay for surgery and chemo, don’t smoke. We can go on and on.
Opening myself up to further criticism;
I was a participant in the ELI program. I am fifty-four years old and work full time for the county. I worked hard to escape the confines of my bio family. I raised high achieving, now adult, sons. I live in the suburbs. But like most of us, after bills there is not much left.
I took custody of a relative. He was crack positive at birth. He was in foster care for the first year of his life. Quite an expense to the county. When I found him , I took full responsibility. But I had to keep working. There was nothing left for day care.
I figure the ELI program enabled me to save the county his foster care expenses, the court battles for PCC, etc. And I strongly believe he will follow in the foot steps of my sons. He will break the pattern in his family. He will be one more college educated, high achieving man, paying his taxes and contributing to society.
Lord, can you all make up your minds? Help the children when they are small or complain about the crime when they are adults.
A bit of FYI jimmy3691, my daughter is a peer at FCBMRDD, which means at her age and children with special needs of her age group learn quicker from one another, and my husband and I both work and we had ELI. We both have full time jobs, and ELI was a blessing. So before you go off on your little “cant take care of your own childen dont have them” fit get your facts straight, ELI is not just for parents who cannot afford daycare it is for those who have full time jobs and due to our jobs we qualify, The reason being is my husband works for Franklin County and I a local School District. So next time get your facts straight sunshine before you spout off idiotic statements. Maybe your parents should not have you, maybe the world would be a better place.
This is probably a good thing. We keep trying to force kids into school earlier and earlier, and they keep getting dumber and dumber. It’s time to try something different.
Maybe moving out of the United States would make you happy.
The government needs to cut all programs geared towards children. The parent is responsible for all costs of having the child. The taxpayer should never be held accountable. If you are to poor or unable to care/feed/support your child, you either need to have an abortion, give it up for adoption or even easier yet, don’t have one. People need to be held accountable for their actions.
