COLUMBUS, Ohio—Two Central Ohio students are forced to get a ride nearly a mile to their bus stop and with school in session for nearly one month, there has been no change to the route.

Linda Little says the bus stop for her children is an .8 miles from their home when it’s supposed to be a half-mile. She has called the Transportation Department of Columbus City Schools but has waited a month to get the stop moved closer to home.

She says a friend drops the kids off at the stop at Sharon Woods Blvd. and Fairhaven Road. Last year, the stop was at Meander Drive and Johnanne Street, which is half a mile from their house.

Columbus City Schools says parents who want to change their bus stop must fill out a change form, which is available at each school in the district.

A spokesman for CCS says Little returned her form August 24, after the June 15 deadline and that changes are acted upon on a first-come, first-served basis.

Little has quite a few people ahead of her on the list, so the change may not take effect for a couple of weeks.

Her children attend St. James the Less, but Columbus City Schools provide their transportation. Parents whose children do not attend CCS schools but use the district’s buses can still pick up bus stop change forms at any neighborhood school in Columbus.

If there is no school bus available to transport a child parents are eligible to receive up to $170 per year as a reimbursement for transportation costs. For more information, call CCS Transportation at 614-365-5074.

This is in reguards to a few of the postings.
As I understand it is our choice to send our kids to a non public school, But at the same time we are paying tax for the busing. If you want to say “sense of entitlement” thats fine, you too would want something your paying for!
If the levy passed for SWCS and then still no busing I believe you to would be equally frustrated.

Also,If you knew the background on how CCS kids are able to attend a Catholic school than you would know that the CCS has to be in academic emergency for atleast 2 out of the last 3 school years (which is most of them), So by no means do I think the transportation situation is lack of “responsible parenting” by wanting our children in a school they dont have to wait years to benefit from. Its no different than SWCS kids now attending other districts for sports. When it comes to our childrens educations and futures we can’t wait months or years for hope of a change!
With that being said I hope you can undersatnd as a parent that its not just a choice its an obligation!

Because you are not sending your child to the public school, that was your choice and there for should anyone should not think that they should provide bussing for you.

I watch the SWCS bus go by our home everyday to pick up charter school kids as my highschool daughter who goes to the SWSC walks to school or when im home we take her!!!!!!!!!!!! BY MY HOME!!!

Come on, really?? YOUR CHOICE NOT MINE!

maybe if the kids walked to the bus stop, american kids wouldn’t be so fat.

Now, as far as the story goes… Drive the kids the extra .3 miles and be thankful for the transportation that you do have.

Parents that send their children to Charter Schools or Private Schools are still homeowners and tax payers. Their taxes fund the Public Schools, so why should they not have the transportation provided?

Yes, some places dont have bus service. I live in the SWCS area and my daughter is in Highschool, she now has no bus to ride and we live pretty far from school. I wish she had to walk the bus stop!!

As far as the private schools and “Charter” schools, I think it’s bogus that SWCS provides them with bussing. It was YOUR choice to send them there, not OURS. The reason why you send your children to those schools is because you dont belive that public schools can do for your child what these schools can do!! Understand??

So you should find a way there for your child. If it was me, I wouldnt have an issue with it because I would understnd that it was my choice.

Iseewhatumean, I cant belive that you would cut down another school district that provides that school with transport. Our tax money is going to a school that doesnt belong to the district so let the parents take them to school.

DONT BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU!!

They should consider themselves fortunate, some school districts have no bus service at all.

I have no sympathy for these parents.  If you choose to send your child to a private or Catholic school, you should find your own way of getting your child to school on time.  It’s called “taking responsibility.“ The sense of entitlement that these parents display is one of the reasons that today’s kids lack discipline.

I teach at a charter school that CCS busses for.  It seems they want to make it as hard as possible on the students so they stop going to the charter and private schools and come back to CCS.  Some of our kids have to catch the bus as early as 5:25 in the morning! 2 1/2 hour before school starts!  You could drive to Cinci in shorter time. They obviously don’t care about the kids.

I too understand your frustration as My children also attend a Catholic school and depend on Columbus Public busing.
It is my understanding that last year Columbus transportation allowed St. Mary Magdalene and St. Cecila to share busing and for whatever reason has rejected it for this school year…meaning no busing for my children. As of right now I’m being told they are working on it, But much like you its been a month.
I turned my paper work in at the end of last year and got my response in the mail the friday before school started,so it gave me less than a day to beable to make contact with CCS Transportation.
I Believe this is their way of making it harder for kids to go out of the district, all while our tax dollars are being spent for such things as busing. Kids and their education should be first priority even if its not through their CCS.
