Grocery Lists Popular Again, Helping To Save Money

» 6 Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio—In a difficult economy, saving money is paramount.  And there are lots of tried-and-true ways to do it.  NBC 4’s Marshall McPeek says one old-fashioned idea is making a comeback with some very modern variations.

Lynn uses a shopping list almost every time she comes to the store. She says it helps keep her organized and keeps her from forgetting anything.

It may also help save some significant cash because it keeps her from impulse buying.

The list also saves gas because Lynn doesn’t have to make a second trip to pick up stuff she forgot the first time.

There are some decidedly modern ways to make and take your list.

At GiantEagle.com, you can create a list directly from the weekly flier.  Click on the sale items to add them directly to your list.  Add the other things you need, print it out and take it to the store.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has a pre-built shopping list of “healthy” items in .pdf form.  Just print it out and put check marks by the things you want to pick up.

GroceryWiz.com helps you create and print lists for free, and at AllRecipes.com, you can not only store your own recipes, you can create pantry lists for things you buy on a regular basis and add all the items from a recipe so you don’t forget anything

There are even mobile applications for your smart phone that you can take into the store. Some are pretty simple, while some are a little more complex.  Most of them will remember items from past lists and help you add them automatically.

Other resources that are helpful are blogs: http://www.stretchingabuckblog.com and http://www.everythingmoms.blogspot.com.

I had never heard of this web services to help with the grocery lists, so thank you for making me aware!
I also find that if I buy gift cards to use at the grocery store I tend to spend less because my amount is budgeted.
Look for gift cards to use at the grocery store and other places at giftcardrescue.com

GCrenter - I agree, it’s total BS that with foodstamps people can buy whatever they want, and from what I’ve seen in stores, at least half of what they buy is junk food.  I love knowing that my tax dollars are buying someone pounds of candy bars, M&M’s, Twinkies, etc.  There needs to be only certain items they can buy, and junk food needs to be on the disallowed list.  No wonder people don’t try to get off welfare, they can sit on their butts all day and eat junk.

unrepentant - OH YES, I am always amazed at what can be purchased with food stamps!  And first of the month at any food store the lines are filled with people who are using their entire month’s allotment on crap like pop, candy, Redbull, potato chips.  WTH??  If it’s that golden on government aid, then I’m off to the office to get some.

When did grocery lists ever go out of style?  I’ve never been without some form of grocery list - be it paper, iPod, Blackberry, or sales flyer with items circled.
