MOUNT VERNON, Ohio—About 100 people gathered in Mt. Vernon’s town square Friday to draw attention to inequality and injustice in Knox County and elsewhere.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.

Robert Cantu, his mother, Marcie, and members of several community groups rallied at noon to make sure residents know Ohio ranks seventh nationally in the number of hate crimes, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

Robert was the victim of a hate crime involving a noose that happened in May 2008.

The suspect was convicted of ethnic intimidation.

People of all races and ages attended the peaceful demonstration.

“All of us are immigrants to this land. The only difference is the length of time between us and our first ancestors to this soil,“ said Pastor David Meredith, of the Broad Street United Methodist Church.

The message at the rally focused on unity. The call for action was change.

“We have failed to protect people like Robert Cantu from hateful attacks. We have failed because we have not properly taught our children to love and embrace diversity instead of being threatened by it,“ said Rabbi Michael Ungar, of Congregation Tifereth Israel.

Sponsors included the Interfaith Association of Central Ohio, the Jewish Federation of Columbus and the League of United Latin American Citizens of Ohio.

This reply is to “912er”
I think it has quite clear especially after the last election that a lot of it has to do with what is becoming the race double standard.  It use to be called “reverse discrimination”; but to me there is no such thing as there is only *discrimination* regardless of what race it is against.  With that being said however it is becoming quite clear that the pendulum has swung to the side of blacks getting away with things against whites that whites use to get away with against blacks.  Some even *count* on this while perpetrating crimes.
I think what is needed is a national town meeting on race where *ALL* facets of race are explored and discussed.

Just read they arrested 3 suspects for his murder. If they are illegal the whole country needs to call DC and find out why the border is not being shut down!!!

Probably not. The Mt. Vernon vigil was composed of mostly local people + a few from Ohio cities other than Knox County’s and Columbus.

Since it would be inappropriate to suggest making Pinatas from the cadavers of the murderers, I’ll suggest a relentless search for them.

Then punish them accordingly, concurrent with a vigil for the murdered guard in honor of his sacrifice and that by his family.

Will these groups be organizing a vigil for Border Agent Robert Rosas who was murdered last night while doing his job?

-When is a crime hate & when not can be a tough question.

Amazing how easy it is to screw up typing, when lying on sofa, laptop on chest.

-When is a crime hate & when nit can be a though question.

  1. If I assault a Black because of color, it is a hate crime.

  2. If a Black assaults me because of color, it is a hate crime.

Hate crimes are not 1-way streets.

Failing to label 2. as it is, a hate crime, is morally and logically indefensible.

I think one reason is that we as a nation will tolerate a “Black Entertainment Television” (BET); but were someone to try and put a “White Entertainment Television” (WET) on the air it would be declared as a racist program and taken off.
I think that until we can get past segregated TV we will have a problem with race.  I know that the pendulum has to swing both ways for a while before equilibrium is reached; but as long as we *let* it continue to swing with such things the longer we will have a problem with race.
I thing it is time all of US Americans decide to be JUST Americans and not, Afro-Americans, or Black Americans, or Asian Americans, or Mexican Americans and instead think of our selves as “American Blacks” or “American Asians” or American Latinos or what ever that we will continue to have a problem; because we should in my opinion think of ourselves as Americans FIRST!! Unless we can do this as a nation I believe we will not only NOT come together as a nation but rather pull further apart.

Sugien, THAT is a Very Good question, too bad nobody can give a good answer!

I would like to know why it is that when a young white kid attacks an old black man it is a hate crime; BUT if a young black man attacks an old white man it is NOT!!!
