Long lines of people waited outside a H1N1 vaccination clinic until 8 p.m. Monday to get their vaccine.
DELAWARE, Ohio —Hundreds waited for more than an hour to get their H1N1 vaccine Monday afternoon and evening in Delaware.
The vaccination clinic was held at Buckeye Valley High School beginning at 3 p.m.
At about 5 p.m., Delaware County Health officials ran out of needles needed for the vaccinations for children under the age of 3. Parents were told that their children could get the vaccine mist instead, or wait for another clinic to be available.
According to Delaware County Health officials, the needle shortage was due to two factors: the supply from the Ohio Department of Health and the evening’s high demand.
“People have to be patient with us,“ said a Delaware County spokesperson. “We’re doing the best we can with what we’ve been given.“
Delaware County Health officials admitted they did not expect the traffic to be backed up like it was Monday. It was estimated that traffic was backed up for 2 miles.
Melissa Perry and her family were the last people in line at one point. She said she would wait for any length of time for her children.
“For my two, the complications for H1N1 are pretty severe. I have a 4-year-old who has asthma, so complications outweigh any inconvenience at this point,“ Perry said.
Delaware County paramedic Curtis Hill recently received his vaccine.
“I personally had a reaction 36 to 48 hours out—some aches and pain, no fever, horrible headache,“ Hill said. “It’s going to be different for everybody. It just depends on each person’s immune system. Obviously, with this one, the H1N1, it’s going to be more severe because there aren’t many people that have any type of immunity to it whatsoever.“
The Centers for Disease Control and Food and Drug Administration is closely monitoring for any signs that the vaccine is causing unexpected adverse reactions. The agencies will work with state and local health officials to investigate any unusual events.

This was complete and utter chaos! I showed up shortly after 12pm to be one of the first in line in order to get my 7 month old child vaccinated. Everyone was lined up in their cars to get into the parking lot since school was still in session. Once the parking lot was cleared out, it was a mad dash to get into the lot, park, and get in line. Somehow there were several hundred people in front of me when I got there because people just left their cars parked on the side of the road and walked/ran to the front of the line instead of waiting their turn in their cars. There has to be a better way to distribute these vaccines. Also, they are not requiring proof of age, pregnancy, occupation, etc. It is based on the honor system. These public clinics are so unorganized it makes me sick. If you have 2,000 vaccines, why not set up 2,000 appointments via phone, online, etc. I don’t understand why anyone would think a physical line of cars/people is the best way to hand out these vaccines. Then, I overheard police and health workers talking about how suprised they were that so many people showed up… Are you kidding me? It’s a good thing this virus isn’t worse than it is. People would be fighting and trampling each other because there is not an organized method of getting the vaccines out to the public. Very scary.
Jeffster…do you not watch the news or read the papers? It was news for 2 days prior that there would be a clinic at BVHS. However, I can imagine that it was a HUGE inconvenience for those of you who live on Coover Rd. There could have been better traffic control, no doubt. It’s not like they didn’t know there would be a massive turnout! My 8-yr old grandson has asthma and was preregistered for the clinic, but woke up early Monday with a fever and throwing up, and spent all afternoon in the ER. Sounds like that was a better place to be…
Would have been nice if the Delaware County Health Dept.or the Sherrif’s dept. or somebody would have let us living on Coover Rd. know they were going to do this yesterday. Couldn’t get into or out of our driveways for over 4 hours yesterday afternoon. And then the news helicopters flying around overhead for hours. Three hours of flying a large helicopter around for 20 seconds of video? Talk about a large carbon footprint!!
