District Issues 1 Of Central Ohio’s 1st Sexting Policies

PICKERINGTON, Ohio—Some parents at Victory Park in Pickerington say they were surprised to see the policy, but glad it exists.

Sexting has become a hot topic of debate among some parents, students and administrators. 

The term refers to taking nude, obscene or pornographic photos and then sending them by electronic means such as through cell-phone texting or e-mailing. 

The Pickerington Local Schools district includes an addendum to its Student Handbooks at the junior-high-school and high-school levels that addresses sexting. 

The addendum was stapled to a Student Handbook at Diley Middle School.

It states, “Any person possessing, taking disseminating, or sharing nude, obscene, pornographic, lewd or otherwise illegal images or photographs may be punished under this Code of Conduct and may be reported to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.”

Columbus City Schools and South-Western City Schools do not have separate sexting policies. 

Both districts say sexting is addressed in the students’ Codes of Conduct. 

Columbus City Schools prohibit the use of cell phones on school property. They must be in the OFF position. 

SWCS prohibits using cell phones, electronic communication devices or other electronic devices that disrupt school activities.

Hilliard City Schools also does not have a policy but prohibits sexual harassment such as many districts.
