COLUMBUS, Ohio—A local postal worker was recognized Thursday after he found an abandoned newborn girl at a vacant home on the city’s East Side.

It’s a story NBC 4 has been following since the infant was found Saturday, June 27.

Livingston Station Letter Carrier Mike Herron found the newborn, who was wrapped in a trash bag, on the porch at the vacant home on Marble Drive.

Herron quickly enlisted the help of neighbors, and the newborn was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

An emotional reunion took place at the Livingston Station, 3850 E. Livingston Ave., Thursday morning.

Postal Carrier Mike Herron received a letter from Postmaster General John Potter that praised him for “attentiveness and quick actions in responding to the cries of an abandoned, newborn child.“

Herron didn’t expect the infant to be at the post office, though, when he received his letter of recognition.

Herron became teary-eyed at the sight of infant who was named Summer. She was named Summer by Franklin County Children Services because she was born on a hot, summer day.

Herron joked that maybe her middle name could be Michelle.

“Uh. Totally shocked. I mean, um. Obviously. We haven’t seen each other since the day I found her, but she was just as beautiful when I found her as she is today,” Herron said about Summer.

He said he hopes to see her again someday.

Herron said he carries around a photo of her and looks at it when he’s having a bad day.

Summer has been placed with a foster family.

Herron also received a special recognition certificate from Columbus Postmaster Robin Ware.

Other workers in the carrier unit stopped their daily routines for a few minutes to watch.

Ware said she hopes the case inspires others to keep an eye on what’s going on in the community.

Much thanks to NitaKaye - told ya I was clueless; makes perfect sense and you have my gratitude.

I respectfully submit that chain of thought would not occur to everyone (perhaps *I* am the lowest common denominator) and could have been explained in the original article.

I think he should become the baby’s God father. Kudos Mike.

Ad hoc, the postal carriers name in Mike, which is usually short for Michael, the female version of Michael is Michelle. Get it now?

Oops, never mind about mom - my bad, earlier separate article.  Though in my defense this info, too, should have been included within the article as a footnote.

“Herron joked that maybe her middle name could be Michelle.“

I don’t get it. A little help, anyone? Forgive me for being clueless…a couple of possibilities come to mind, but unless it’s painfully obvious the “joke” should have been explained in the original article.

GanGan:
I don’t recall reading in the article that the mother had been found.  As for the father, there are any number of possible explanations.  He could be, as you suppose, uninterested or “deadbeat” - though this assumes he knew the mother was pregnant in the first place and that he still sees her.  There are other possibilities as well, including a concealed pregnancy - it’s happened before.  I don’t believe we have enough facts right now to say anything beyond that this is a tragic story with a happy ending for the baby and, hopefully, a lucky adoptive family.

Should more come to light later, there is always ample time to dole out blame.

Very nice story!  What a wonderful postal Carrier !  I applaud him for his actions.  We need more people in the world like him.  And what an honour for him to have the baby present.
May that little girl find a forever home, with loving parents.

This is a very touching story.  I’m happy that they found the mother, but what about the father?  Who is he and why isn’t he asking about his child?  We as a society need to demand more from fathers.

The child has a last name. FCCS named her. I assume her adoptive parents can have her name legally changed. The media typically doesn’t give minors’ full names. I hope that helps.

What a nice story! I guess I never thought of it before, but how do they give a child like this a last name while it’s in foster care, before being adopted? Or do they not give the child a last name unless they are adopted?
