COLUMBUS, Ohio —More than 32 million Americans will hit the road for he upcoming Memorial Day travel weekend, thanks in part to lower gas prices. But many are choosing a staycation as a means to enjoy the weekend and save money.

The Memorial Day weekend sets the tone for the summer vacation season. But in this tough economy, Central Ohioans are redefining the family vacation.

“We are just going to stay at home, do some things around the house, do some yard work,“ Tricia Velegol said during an outing in High Banks Metro Park.

For the budget conscience staycationer, there are plenty of Ohio getaway opportunities that won’t break the bank. Many cost less than $30 and many are free.

For less than $25 a person, consider a day trip to Geauga Lake Wildwater Kingdom, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

Destinations under $15 a person include the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Adena Mansions and Gardens in Chillicothe and COSI, which debuts its’ Invention Convention exhibit this weekend.

Finally, for those looking for a freebie this weekend, consider visiting any of Ohio’s 74 state parks, Newark Earthworks in Heath and the National Museum of the United States Air Force.
