Switching Districts Isn’t Always Easy
GROVE CITY, Ohio—The Hilliard City School District has received dozens of calls from parents of students in the South-Western City School District, asking about transferring their students this Fall, due to SWCS’ lack of high school sports. South-Western City had to cut sports due to budget constraints.
Although Issue 2 on the August 4 ballot will allow voters to decide whether to bring back sports through a four-year, 8.3-mill operating levy, some families want to move out of the SWCS district.
Hilliard’s District Compliance Officers verifies all new enrollments. Staff makes home visits to registered addresses and even rumored addresses if the district gets tips from bus drivers or neighborhood parents that certain students don’t actually live in the Hilliard district.
Visits are conducted year-round, often at night, when parents are expected to be home.
Hilliard City Schools has been making home visits for about four years.
15-year-old Donni Wilks went to Pleasant View Middle School last year in the South-Western City School District. She wants to move so she can run Track and play Basketball this Fall, but she doesn’t yet know where. Wilks and her mother have been discussing Columbus City Schools.
One woman told NBC 4 she plans to move her son to Obetz so he can play sports. She says two colleges are considering her son for athletic scholarships.

I think Freewill needs a hug or something. If it takes a kid 10 minutes to change and undress then he really does needs gym!
And…. Franklin Heights just graduated a student with a tennis scholarship, and has a class of ‘11 athlete that’s made the state finals in track since she was a FRESHMAN. I’m quite sure this outstanding honor roll athlete will have the pick of colleges of her choice as long as she keeps running.
Hey Freewill—before you post such an inaccurate statement about teams and athletes, do your research so you don’t look so ignorant. The girls softball team has been winning Sectionals, Regionals and District Championships for years; the volleyball teams are champions as well as other teams. In addition, there are many students that have signed letters of intent and gone on to play sports for colleges—so yes, the district DOES have good teams and athletes. Check this link before you hurl insults again: http://www.grovecitygreyhounds.com/softball.htm
And this link is just for Grove City High School, I have read about many other winning athletes within the district attending the other high schools.
The district’s students deserve a well-rounded education, which includes the extra curriculars, sports, AP classes, etc. The same benefits we enjoyed when we went to high school. Pay it forward.
When are the residence of this district going to appreciate education! This levy is not about a gym class or a football game it is about the education of our children. This is about the classes our children will be offerred, we will be offering our children a state miminum education if we do not pass this levy. This will effect every grade level. Parents are looking to leave please due to lack of course selections, risk of loosing AP classes in the fall, no national honor society, you name it, it is gone. Try applying to college with a state minimum education, parents complain now, wait until they have to pay for classes at Columbus State to make their student eligible to apply to a 4 year college. Please look at the facts. This levy is needed. One levy in 15 years.
BTW,my husband showed me an ad to join a westside football team for 10 bucks in the westside paper.Nighty night.
We’ll agree on one thing,it’s not the kids fault.IT IS THE OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY SWCS THAT IS TO BLAME-their raises take priority over all else.
I have to jump in here to make a statement. Gym class is 50 minutes long. Let’s take away 10 mins to dress, then 10 minutes to redress. That leaves little Johnny 30 minutes to exercise & work up a sweat. The majority of the kids don’t even raise their heart rate enough to amount to anything. On the days they have to ‘do the mile’, you can see the majority of them ‘strolling’ on the track & hamming it up with their peeps.
How many athletic scholarships do you really think are handed out to SWCS?? It’s not like they have major star players or even winning teams.
I care very much about the facts, would you like to give me some? The club sports are extremely expensive, a friend of mine spent over $2000 on club soccer for their child last year. And the availability of those teams gets less and less as the kids get older and play high school sports.
Kids are more overweight than ever for a whole slough of reasons which have nothing to do with this discussion.
College applications may indeed use community volunteering and activities for their criteria, but still weigh heavily on school participation… and things like National Honor Society aren’t available outside of it.
I’ve said my peace, and the street lights are on and it’s past my bedtime. It’s not the students’ faults that their education in SWCS is being sliced and diced as if there is no human impact. They neither voted for nor against it, and are only paying the price and trying to salvage the high school education they’ve been lead to expect.
You just don’t care about facts,do you? KIDS ARE MORE OVER WEIGHT THAN EVER! With mandatory gym!
And anyone can join an independant community team of your choice! It’ll still pass on a college application.Maybe even look better, when you explain in said resume, that your district was forced to cut these programs in lieu of teacher, principal, administrator raises-showing that you had the personal initiative to DO SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE ABOUT IT!
We’re not living in the olden days when people had decent paying jobs with benefits. We’ve GOT TO START ELIMINATING that which is ineffective and making real money saving decisions.
Now or later-BIG changes will have to made as incomes dwindle and paid taxes naturally follow suit.
