AEP, City, Residents Agree On Transmission Line Solution
UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio—American Electric Power has been working with the city of Upper Arlington to work out the kinks surrounding a six-mile transmission line on Lane Avenue.
The transmission line starts at the Roberts Road substation and runs all the way to the OSU campus.
NBC 4’s Tanya Hutchins reported with the FAST FACTS on how the two sides are coming together and where the project stands.
Some West Side residents and Upper Arlington business owners had some concerns, though.
West Side residents said they are concerned about above-ground power lines.
Upper Arlington businesses said they are concerned about access during construction.
Upper Arlington said AEP agreed to certain conditions to settle those concerns.
Contstruction will begin later than originally planned, and the city also will put its own fiber-optic lines in the same trench as the new transmission line.
Construction won’t begin until after the Buckeye football season.
“ … Allowing for the opportunity for easy access into the shopping center is imperative,” Upper Arlington City Engineer Tom Komlanc said.
The new transmission line will be installed underground from the Scioto River to Ohio State and make service more reliable.
It also will increase electricity capacity for customers in Northwest Columbus.
Right now, the transmission line remains in the design phase but could be up and running by spring.
