COLUMBUS, Ohio—A baby died and a young mother was injured after a one-car accident Tuesday night.

Columbus police released this information Wednesday morning: The accident occurred just before 9 p.m. on Nelson Road under the Interstate 670 overpass. Police said Jessica McKinley, 22, of Columbus was driving her 1994 Chevrolet Beretta north on Nelson Road, south of Avalon Place. For unknown reasons, McKinley drove off the right side of the roadway and struck a traffic barrier.

McKinley was transported to Grant Medical Center in stable condition.

McKinley’s 1-year-old baby was transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in critical condition. The child was believed to have had a fractured skull and leg.

The baby died from his or her injuries a little after 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Nelson Road between Avalon and Maryland was closed while authorities investigated the scene.

Investigators were unsure if alcohol, weather or roadway conditions played a part in the fatal vehicle crash. The crash remained under investigation.
